Thanks for posting this. I am still on the fence about using in CR for my trip. I'll keep this in mind.

No, you should absolutely just use taxis.

And, of course, since Tico taxistas are well known for their scrupulous honesty if you accidently leave anything in their cab the taxista will immdiately return it...

The above is sarcasm. While taxi drivers in places like La Sabana where gringos are rare are just typical Tico taxistas (poor service and steal anything you leave)

Before I started using Uber and used taxis whenever I went to the supermarket, usually Walmart because I lived in Vista Linda Apartments my first couple months here, I oddly always noticed SOMETHING missing from my grocery bags, usually something small and expensive...more often than not...expensive meat... :x

At age 64 am I getting early alzheimer's and forgetting something? Are the bag boys or cashiers getting these things? Am I always dropping the small expensive items from my bags as I move about???? :?: :?: :?: :oops: :oops: :oops: :x :x :x

I started stopping before I left the store and twisting the tops of the plastic bags shut tight and counting the bags, one occasion I "lost" a full bag. :shock: :? :oops:

I guess I was dropping things out of the bags, apparently after tying them off the problem went away... :roll: (second example of sarcasm...)

Now I live walking distance to Auto Mercado and just go there myself on foot, even though I carry the bags home on foot and don't tie them off anymore, for some strange reason I no longer lose anything anymore... :? :? :?

I have lived in San Jose for over ten years and have taken red taxis from grocery stores hundreds of times. Including from Walmart to vista Linda. Never once was any item missing.
How could the driver steal anything if you put the bags in the back seat , you get in the front seat, and the bags are never out of your sight?
Maybe an item or two could slip out of a bag and wind up on the floor but its on you to check for that.
A little dementia sneaking in maybe.
Now there was a guy named Willie living at Vista Linda way back when. He loaded up at Walmart with tons of food and two cases of beer. Had the driver go to nova centro jetbox to check his mail. While he was in the store the taxi driver took off. Lesson learned.

Negative. You probably got lucky. when I went shopping the drivers insisted on putting the bags in the trunk, it's his cab so I went along with it. Living in a gated community, I would go open the gate and place a rock against the gate door to prop it open, there's his opportunity. As I am doing this, the driver is rifling through the bags in the trunk, bringing them to me, enough time for an experienced thief to view what's in them, grab the small packet of meat and cover it up or hide it somehow. :x

Many people have tried to refute my experiences, for what end I have no idea, but when I lived in the USA with my own car this never happened, after I tied off the tops of the bags it never happened, but it happened more than enough times in between to be a coincidence, droppage or the product or my vivid imagination.

Based on your logic, using your own experience as the sole justification of your supposition, I can declare that I live in San Jose, walk all over by myself, even at night, and have never been mugged. Therefore, I must state that those individuals who claim to have been mugged must be imagining it and more than likely, in a drunken state, they either lost their wallet or their last chica got it and the cuts and bruises to their faces are the result of them being drunk and falling down... :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I pay the taxi driver I put the bags where I want them. That's the back seat. I handle all the bags myself. I am not a cripple. I take charge. He never touches my bags.
Why wouldn't you do it this way if you thought the drivers were stealing from you.
Hundreds of trips with groceries. Never heard of anyone at vista Linda having that problem.
Driver must have thought you were a sap and easy to steal from. Time and time again.
Over the many years I have lived and worked in Costa Rica I have witnessed, read about, heard about many many muggings. But never ever about a taxi driving stealing groceries right under your nose. You gotta watch your shit in CR.
There is a good saying in Colombia that applies in this case....no dar papaya

Why wouldn't you do it this way if you thought the drivers were stealing from you?

Answer;

"By the time I realized it, and it wasn't like a dozen times, maybe 2 or 3 times, I started tying the tops off and counting the bags, that ended the problem."

"The way it works is first time you assume it fell out of the bag or something. You check your receipt to make sure you did buy the item, it didn't fall out of the grocery cart."

"2nd time you go..."Hmmm...that's odd...you check the receipt again, but fumbling with 7,8,9,10 bags, between the cab and the gate, probably lost again but could the cabbie have taken it?"

"Third time's a charm, that's when you know... :x :evil: that's when I started tying off and what a surprise, nada missing. Of course, 3x the most expensive small meat item could have fallen out, who knows, stranger things have happened but I don't believe in coincidences..." :x

"Also, it's not like it happens every trip, maybe in 15 to 20 trips the 3 MIA situations occurred..." :arrow:

Hundreds of trips with groceries. Never heard of anyone at Vista Linda having that problem.

Kinda like an answer...;

"Years ago in my ancient days of working, I joined a group that bought and flipped houses, one of their problems is they would sign a contract with someone who didn't qualify, (often backed up by a flake mortgage broker and/or realtor) and they kept the house off the market for 1 to 2 months.

Since I was an experienced mortgage broker, any one who wanted to buy one of their houses had to get past me. I was strict and demanded proof of income, assets, and pull my own credit report on them, if the answer was "No", my reply was "Hasta la vista, baby..." :x

Often the potential buyer and/or realtor and mortgage broker didn't like this and/or was hesitant to cooperate fully, they would say "We never heard of this..." :? :?

My reply was, "Now you have, we learn something new every day now, don't we???" :lol: 8)

Driver must have thought you were a sap and easy to steal from. Time and time again.

Response;

"Ummm...do you always get the same driver? I rarely do..." :?

Over the many years I have lived and worked in Costa Rica I have witnessed, read about, heard about many many muggings. But never ever about a taxi driving stealing groceries right under your nose.

Answer; See previous response...if you're not sure what I'm getting at, I'll elaborate... :mrgreen:

You gotta watch your shit in CR...

Agreed...There's more...;

"Back in the ancient good old days, 2003 to say 2009, New Fantasy was a top hot spot, I loved the two way mirror, when they removed that, things immediately started going downhill... :x :x :x

In any event, in those days the girl would shower and or go to the sauna and or steam room with you obediently... :D Suddenly, girls wouldn't want to do that, and you might go alone, I loved the steam room...or after the session, when taking a shower, they would finish before you and bound back to the room while you're still toweling off. Me and friends of mine who would often go there together thought nothing of it even though our wallets were there... :oops: :?

OK, stupid, I admit it, but I wasn't the only fool, my only excuse was I was still a dumb mistake making newbie to a degree. Often we would get home and I would count my cash and review my spending. :?

Where did that 5k or 10k colones go??? :shock: :? :x :oops: :evil: :cry: :!:

We all carried typically 100k colones or more, and often had a fat wad of 10k colones in the wallet. They wouldn't wipe you out, they figured you would see immediately and come charging back in to see the manager, but slip a 5k or 10k note when there's so many...who would know? :shock:

Finally after getting fleeced about 3x each, and only if we went to NF, we genius sleuths figured it out.... :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I also know every stitch of clothes I wear. Vista Linda has this rip off policy of nailing you for about $10 for the maid to wash your clothes, a small basket, even though they have several washers and dryers, you can't do your own. :x

That alone is a royal fleecing, unless you want to stink, or wash your clothes in the shower (Which I did...) look at $50 a month... :evil:

One day the maid returned my wash. I had this Tico style blue and red checkered shirt, a very nice one I bought from a high end Tico shop here, joking that I wanted to make people think I'm a Tico when I'm walking around. Other than me, no gringos would wear it, but it was a beautiful shirt for a Tico.

I kept a particular eye out for it because it was new (some of my clothes still date back to the 90's) different, and I really liked it. One wash I knew it was in, when my clothes were returned, MIA.

When I asked her about it, she sort of fidgeted, squirmed and went on and on and on with excuses and wasn't it Shakespeare who said "Methinks thou dost protest too much..."???

Yeah, I love being here and the majority of people are good and honest, but many here think "Puda Vida" means they get to puda their hands in your pockets... :x :x :x

how much have you guys been tipping? from Airport to SL (my enter button doesnt work sorry) From SL to DR, From SL to Zona etc.

I would be interested in typical rates too - use Uber all the time in the US, but never have in CR. You guys use it for longer trips like Del Rey to Jaco, or just the shorter trips?

Thanks guys.
