Taxis are a cheap and very good form of transportation. Initial cost is 695 Colones. One needs to remember that the MARIA (meter) keeps running even when you are in a traffic jam.
Last year we took a cab from Heredia to the Gulch(delrey) and at about 10:am on a weekday the traffic was terrible and smart cabbies know how to take short cuts and save you money.(My wife is very cabbie savvy and said that this is the way it is) Even with the cabbie taking go arounds the fee for the trip there and back was $56.00 American. Should you decide to stop and hit an ATM such as Scotia Bank then it is cheaper to have the cab just wait for you.
Just something a newbie needs to know.

PS: NEVER NEVER EVER get into a cab with two people in it! Even if one is a woman. Don't let them stop and pick up anyone else either.

$56 to Heredia and back?

Damn... you paid gringo prices. Or more likely a fast meter.

You are begging to have your bags stolen! What’s the stop the cabbie from taking off when you get out and tending to the ATM? That is just simply bad advice for anybody!

Maybe i need to type slower. I am referring to when you are out about town and need some more cash. I guess you can be happy with getting colones at the del rey. My brother in law drives a red taxi and if you take time enough to just get the taxi number off the car then a call to the police will have a great affect very quickly and i know that because my sister in law is a cop also.

Also if you leave the gulch in one of the regular taxi guys that work the hotels yoiu are safer.

Take the trip yourself during heavy traffic. I did it and my Tica wife was with me and she knows what is up! IT was more expensive going into San Jose than going back to Heredia.

What assurance do you have that a UBER driver wouldn't steal your stuff.

I'm not sure where this is coming from...

1. I don't leave things in Ubers.

2, With Uber the app gives you the driver's name; his phone number; make, year and model of car; and his license plate number. If he does steal 'your stuff' that you've left in his car you have plenty of information to give the police - and to report to Uber, who is going to suspend him (i.e., he loses his job).

When you leave your stuff in a taxi roja and he drives off... what have you got? His taxi number? Did you write that down?

And when you take an Uber from Heredia to San Jose, not only do you know upfront what it is going to cost but the driver's Uber app updates the driver him constantly on traffic, routing, etc.

There's many reasons people are increasingly using Uber. Clean cars; drivers who know where they are going; straight up pricing without trickery...

But your BiL is a taxista so there you go.

I have seen no trickery from taxi drivers. The taxis i was riding in were using WAVE and a red taxi is everywhere and you are assuming that a newbie is just riding by himself. Plenty of newbies go places together. There PLENTY of crimes committed by Uber drivers. Ask any newbie in the lobby of the delrey how to call UBER and i doubt anyone will. The doorman will fix you up with a red taxi in moments. Are you saying that a UBER driver stuck in traffic just like a ead taxi won't charge you more? Tell me because i don't know. You caN COME UP WITH ALL THE REASONS AND EXCUSES YOU WANT BUT A NEWBIE WILL MOST OFTEN END UP IN A RED TAXI. THE SCOTIA BANK IN HEREDIA ALMOST ALWAYS HAS A HUGE GUARD OUT FRONT AND THEY HAVE SECURITY CAMERAS AS WELL AND THEY DON'T WANT PEOPLE SCARED FROM USING THEIR ATM.The advice i have given is true and i have been coming to CR since 2003 and i now live here! DO AS YOU LIKE!

Uber quotes the rate before you are picked up, already taking traffic in to effect for the pricing. Often times the rate quoted is higher than what is actually billed, but never seen it billed higher than the quote myself, regardless of traffic.

Is UBER legal yet. The last i read on Dec7th UBER is still illegal.
I googled this this morning.

https://costaricalaw.com/costa-rica-leg ... osta-rica/

As a result of recent rulings by the Costa Rican Supreme Court that enforced the government regulation of the taxi services in Costa Rica the government of President Luis Guillermo Solis has officially announced by way of the Minister of Public Transportation that ” We shall formally declare the absolute illegality of any form of public transport that uses the Uber platform or any other.” Based on this it is clear that the current government is taking the position that the use of Uber in Costa Rica is not legal. Any Uber driver that is caught carrying a passenger is now subject to a fine of 160,000 Colones and the vehicle will be taken out of circulation. On the other hand Uber Costa Rica continues its position that the platform is legal and will continue to defend its drivers.

You might be standing by the side of the road waiting for a Red Taxis.AFTER THEY CONFISCATE THE uber vehicle. Imagine standing at a toll booth on your way to the airport and the Uber vehicle you were riding in just got confiscated! Imagine that the UBER vehicle has a flat and the policia confiscate the vehicle along side the road. Baggage or not a Gringo is a great target for robbery standing along the road to the airport or at night on a dark street.

Has anyone at the Delrey got you a UBER DRIVER.? As a newbie do you know how to get an UBER DRIVER? Why ride with a person that is breaking Costa Rican laws? Why would a Policia want to help a gringo Uber passenger .As i said my sis- in= law is a cop and why would she want to help someone that is participating in an illegal business and stealing a passenger from her brother or friend?

TAXIS AND UBER DRIVERS GET INTO IT and it is possible to get involved with a Taxis driver and Uber driver.fight with a brick thrown into your window.

Be safe! Be smart as a Newbie! After you learn the ropes take any chance you want
