First, excellent post Hless125. I agree with just about everything you said. I have followed the Cuba Dave saga since it began. I also find it very troubling and inhumane for the legal authorities to detain a person indefinitely without presenting an indictment or charges against him. As many posters have mentioned the activity he posted about is legal. Simply put the CR legal authorities are disingenuous hypocrites. If anyone were to start a website called
http://www.crputas.com and posted everything Cuba Dave did and more, and was actually indicted by the authorities in CR, and they requested extradition, there is probably not a judge in free world who would grant the request.
Others, who know Cuba Dave have commented that he was actually aware of the law and still carried on in the same manner as he always had. Even though what is happening to CD is horrendous and inhumane at this point he still did it to himself. He let his enormous ego control his judgment and now he is paying a brutal price.
My hunch is the US authorities may have cooperated in this case. I am posting a link to a Miami New Times article about CD in which stated the authorities in Miami confiscated CD's camera, computer ect... at a border search in Miami. I think they looked for evidence of a possible crime and could not find any as the girls were probably all over 18. However, because of this quirky law he could be charged in Costa Rica and he subsequently was.
http://www.miaminewtimes.com/news/cubad ... dy-6394213Another lesson that should be learned from this saga is that a person from a foreign country can be held in this indefinite state of preventative detention for any other crime you may be accused of while the CR authorities allegedly investigate it. Be careful out there guys and lay low and avoid any kind of trouble.
Loco Mike,
Thank you for the kind words on my post. After reading the Miami New Times story there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that the U.S. Authorities worked in conjunction with the Costa Rican Authorities.
That should have put Cuba Dave on notice that he was being watched. How many thousands of travelers entering the United States every year from Costa Rica have their digital media confiscated. I have been traveling as a solo male traveler to Costa Rica since 2006 at least six times a year and have never been stopped much less searched and definitely nothing confiscated "for further investigation".
Cuba Dave either was oblivious to what was happening or like many have written his ego got in his way and have caused an absolute catastrophe in what he has left of life.
Cuba Dave, unfortunately for him, missed the signs that were slapping him in the face. He may have been under the impression that because he is American he is untouchable.
As allied as the United States is with Costa Rica don't you think all the American ambassador would have to do is speak to his Costa Rican counterpart and he would be released and transported to the airport with the understanding he is banned from ever entering Costa Rica again almost immediately?
Lets be clear, Costa Rica did this to themselves. Cuba Dave didn't make it known to the world what occurs in Costa Rica. If you search anywhere on the web or YouTube look what you find. It's endless.
Cuba Dave CLEARLY pissed someone off. I don't know maybe he posted photos of a cop's or a Judges "regular". But, you see that's the point, all you have to do is rub someone the wrong way that has a bit of power or authority and your life will be turned upside down just as Cuba Dave's has been.
And, the truly scary part is it could all be a lie. Who are they going to believe an American that they view as exploiting their woman or ANY Costa Rican and you too could be held on "preventative Detention" and released two years later with no charges. With absolutely no recourse.
If anyone thinks that everyone in Costa Rica is all righteous and lying is beneath them, think again. It is still a third world country where human rights means absolutely nothing to them. Especially the human rights of a "Rich American" which is strongly believed by them.
The ramifications are scary. The best thing to do is if you are going to be in this game keep to your own little group of trusted because if you piss off the wrong person your are potentially F****D!!
