The normal time is about 2 hours before the flight, but with the new passport checks, I would allow at least an extra hour. I would plan on being there no later than 9-9:30am.

I try to discourage people from coming to the airport from long distances like this due to the uncertainty on the roads. An accident, a mudslide, construction, or general traffic can really mess up your plans.

I suggest you come in the day/night before, and stay in SJ overnight and leave for the airport at 8:15am. There is a daily Interbus shuttle at 10am that arrives in San Jose at 12:45pm. It's $37.

I have to disagree with Orange on this one. The vast majority of the time, coming back from Jaco on the day of your flight is no big deal. There is also two other ways to get from Jaco to the airport with both being about 30-45 minutes longer than Ruta 27. In the last two or three years, I haven't had a single person miss a flight due to traffic problems.

For a 12:20pm flight, I'd advise leaving Jaco no later than 8:30am. It will take about 1.5 hours to get to the airport from Jaco, 1.25 on a good day.

I don't know of any shuttles that will drop you at the airport but like Orange said, Interbus will get you to a hotel really close like the Marriott right next to Wal-Mart which is right across the highway from the airport. The regular buses do not stop at the airport.

Orange has good conservative advice!

But I have a high beta and never found any utils of satisfaction staying last night at airport hotel. I haven't got bitten yet, but I could some day! Because anything can happen on roads in CR.

+1 stay in Jaco last night and drive straight to airport. I can't give advice for your departure...but we leave at 5:30am from Jaco for 9:00am flight and there is ZERO traffic so we always make it no problem.

I used to stay at airport hotel....but when you factor in cab ride round trip from gulch for one last fling....not worth it for me....ymmv.

My .02 colones.
