One positive note. If the thief did jump into a river just outside of Jaco, he was probably devoured by crocodiles :D :D

They don't care if it's a gringo bag or a local's ... if they're a thief, they'll steal it.

The cable-tie is a good idea, and I did the same with my non-stowed bags to La Fortuna. I noticed a few locals doing the same with strips of colored cloth. It just slows down a thief and makes their bag more of a hassle, and therefore less of a target.

Moral of the story...if you don't want your luggage stolen, don't travel with thieves! This applies here, there and anywhere...

My point was....the thief is much more likely to go after a gringo vs tico , thinking the reward will be better ....trust me I have been on enough busses to know when the eyes of the bad guys are on me or my stuff

That's the downside of going on local public bus.. it's cheaper than a private option but you're going to stick out like a sore thumb with the poor(er) locals and very possibly end up a target.

One time I was on a bus and a young blonde female (exchange student or tourist obviously not a local) was talking to her friends in Spanish on her phone .. stashes her phone in her bag when she's done which is under her seat then maybe an hour or so later she checks and it's gone.

If you do public transportation always keep your backpack on your person .. this applies to much of Latin America. And don't let anyone on the bus trick you into doing otherwise

I do not have enough fingers or toes to count the number of people (gringo and Tico) whom I know to have been robbed in this manner. From non-aggressive to snatch and grab.

I have taken bus a few times between playas del coco and San Jose but mostly fly ($8 for a 6 hour bus ride or $30something for a resident rate on a 45 minute flight, easy guess which one I chose.) now a days. If I take the bus I stow my suitcase as far into the belly of the bus I can. And I usually buy two seats as I am 6'4" and need the space. Plus I put any carry on to the window side.
