Got an email ad, Southwest is advertising sales for holidays, November and December. Figured, what the hell, and checked. $470 round trip from Vegas after taxes and fees! And 2 bags free so no hidden fees. I head down next Saturday, so figured what the hell...booked a trip for the 40th birthday . Looks like they got new connections running out of Houston and will be flying into Liberia soon as well. Great news for peeps that have Southwest as a major carrier out of their town. Good luck!

Southwest will begin flying out of Hobby (Houston's other airport) on October 15 and have some really good fares, at least from Houston ($174 and $179 each way). Here's a link to their site:

If you want to sweeten the deal further, here's what I did minus some minor details.

Get 2 Chase Southwest reward credit card @ 50k point/each + Manufacture $10k in spending = 110k point and a free companion pass on Southwest Airline.

The above will give me 4 trips for me and my wingman flying out of NYC to SJO for a total of about $620 in fees and taxes

Great call on that one. Make sure your wing treats you to a session or two for the savings you helped him with.

Some fares are $149 each way. Flight to SJO arrives at 1150pm. Flight out leaves at a decent 900am or 930am. I checked flights from other cities and they're very high. I think that might change though based on past experience.

I've received some eblasts on deals with AA and DL.

I read somewhere where United handles 90% of the airline traffic heading south out of Houston, so it looks like Southwest Air is going after some of that business.

Looks like Southwest is finally going to bring some sanity to the pricing of CR flights from Houston!!

Now that is some great ideas above! I'd just add Capital One and Discover Miles cards are also fabulous for redemption. Still have 100k miles left on my Discover after paying for my trip this Saturday. Although hadn't thought about the companion part with Southwest. Hmmmm.. That would make three miles credit cards for me. lol. That is great idea indeed. Ideas, ideas...
