Well, the Copa Mundo begins next Thursday, June 12. Costa Rica probably won't win a single game, being in Group D, which appears to be the strongest group. The other teams in that group are Italy, England and Uruguay. I imagine the entire country will 'shut down' when their matches are on. And if they do win a match...fiesta! Maybe the Ticas at the DR, SL, et al will be giving away free sessions :) Well, I doubt that.

I don't expect the US to go very far either, being in Group G with Germany, Ghana and Portugal. Some people were upset that Landon Donovan was left off the squad. I'm not that upset that Klinsmann left him off.

Thank God they won't have the same annoying noisemakers (vuvuzelas) at this World Cup! Those phuckin things made watching the games almost unbearable...sounded somewhat like a hugh swarm of bees. This
World Cup will have a new official noisemaker, the caxirola, said to be less loud and not as annoying as the vuvuzelas. But, apparently FIFA has banned the use of them in the stadiums.

Costa Rica's first game is Saturday night, June 14th, against Uruguay.

Here are the odds to win the World Cup...
Brazil: 11/4
Argentina: 4/1
Germany: 11/2
Spain: 6/1
Colombia: 40/1
USA: 250/1
Costa Rica: 2500/1

Ah....yes....the World Cup and football.....one of the most if not THE most racist professional sports going down at present, elevating that guy Sterling to near Saint status....

Let's each count the number of bananas thrown onto the pitch as well as the number of times monkey chants start. Will the same country that has the highest banana count be the very same country with the most chants?

That's good news about no vuvuzelas. It is amazing how obnoxious those things were last time. How could something that starts out being spelled like a wonderful thing (vulva) be so ridiculously annoying.

I realize that it's possible to mute the TV (if you're at home), but I like to hear Andres Cantor, the Mexican announcer on Telemundo say GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

http://youtu.be/4mI7upqJieE
Al Michaels said afterwards "this was just a test of the emergency broadcast system"

Here's another one...
http://youtu.be/ktCrxyIrK2A
"God Bless America"

And finally, on the Simpsons...

Thanks Gringotim, great clips. I hope Costa Rica wins against Uruguay Saturday. There will be lots of drunk horny chicas in San Jose. Oh hell, there will probably be drunk horny chicas no matter what happens.

I don't think Costa Rica has much of a chance on Saturday, as Uruguay has a very good team. It'll probably be 3-1 or 4-1. They'll be a lot of depressed Ticas (and Ticos) on Saturday night. If CR does win, it would be a huge upset.

Brazil won yesterday, but did not look good. If Croatia had a better goal tender, Brazil may have lost the game. Brazil also got a huge break on an obvious flop by Fred in the box. One of the referees gave Brazil a penalty shot, which they scored on, but they should have given Fred a yellow card for flopping. If Brazil plays like they did yesterday, they might not make it out of their own Group.

Good point, Rasclat. I, perhaps, overstated my contempt for the EUROPEAN "FANS" who are doing the banana throwing and monkey chanting. Still, it is so pervasive in Europe that one IS compelled to wonder. It'll be a sweet moment in time should a
non-peckerwood dominated team seize this years cup. I particularly enjoy seeing beat downs handed to the U.K. and Germany. Well, let's not leave out the Swedes and Swiss. *shrug*

Back to the pitch and the tournament..... (Thanks Gringotim for starting this thread).

Germany just beat Portugal 4-0, with Mueller getting three goals. That's good for the US, as Portugal is in the same group.
The most impressive teams so far have been the Netherlands and Germany. They will be hard to beat. The Netherlands has Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie, two of the best players in the world.
I don't give Costa Rica much of a chance against Italy (Friday at noon EST), but I said the same thing before they played Uruguay. If they beat Italy, with Pirlo and Mario Balotelli, it would be an even bigger upset than the win over Uruguay, and one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

Costa Rica deserved that goal after their guy got mugged and the ref let play continue....

CRC 1-0 over Italy at the half. It must be nuts down there...wish I was there to see it.
