For those that fly United, I was just checking airfares for January 2014. The fares in January are $400 higher than the fares in December. I thought $740 was high (from Kansas City, through Houston) and now I see $1140 in January. They also seem to be dropping the price of their Business First seats, which must be an effort to minimize free upgrades. Also, they don't offer some of the most desirable flights except at exorbitant rates. You can find the flights when you search for one way tickets, but when you try to book a round trip the flights disappear. It's crazy, so I am going to wait until December to check prices and try again.

Jan is always expense, its normally a steady increase till Christmas and then in Jan it should drop.

I'm finding $500 flights or 35,000 miles Jan 28 to Feb 6th NY to SJO which is a deal, likely I will go over Superbowl and use miles

American fares from Chicago in January around Super Bowl time currently at $740. Just came back from CR at $576. All fares going through Miami or Dallas. Also worried that proposed merger with US Air could mean higher fares and less flights.

More expensive to get here but we will find a way !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember when I first started going to SJO. September and November of 2006. The September flight was ~$350 via American, and the November flight was $271 via Delta. Good times.

Airline prices are based on supply and demand and how many airlines fly a certain airport. For example I was flying RT non-stop DFW-SJO on AA for $568 and the guy beside me was flying LGA-SJO RT for $298. so he was flying twice as many miles as I but the New York market has many airlines flying to SJO while DFW does not

Go figure. Must be start of dry season why they gouging us. Right now Calena poos look like it gonna be tastin real good. :D

Can someone give me a general range of cost from JFK or EWR to SJO nowadays?....I was looking at October 2014 and looks around 500-550?

Is that about the range you should expect? Or does it drop a lot to the 400-500 range or really rarely nowadays?

You can get low-mid 400's. In August, I paid 428 on JetBlue out of LGA, but they have JFK too. And don't book too far ahead. These days airlines raise fares really far out (more than 60 days), not lower them like the old days.

BTW-Spirit airlines has fares in the mid-3's but with all their nickel and diming, it comes out to about the same.

Some things that have helped me find cheaper fairs.

Always fly on a Tues, Wed or Thur.

Buy your tickets later in the week. Air Fair wars always start on Monday and if some airline lowers its fair yours may join in later in the week.

At about 6 weeks before the date of the flight the airline will lower prices if they have a certain % of unsold seats.

Check prices often and go directly to the airline website.

In the end, I am going to pay the fair if I want to go.

excellent advice. my mo exactly. used to get $300 fares out of LA nonstop on taca but those days are gone forever. i switch dates, go back and forth, look for that window of opportunity and the truth is 500-600 is just what it cost these days. and if i fly delta its 80 more to have blood flow to my legs.
