Just heard on the radio that Hobby approved an international terminal. Still has to be approved by city though. United is apparently pitching a fit. Maybe Southwest will add an SJO flight.

The question is will this lower United's "new" price from IAH to SJO of around $850? That price is robbery.

United are god-damn crooks. If they lobby against Hobby hopefully SWA has a strong team of lawyers to lobby in DC against United's monopoly.

Not sure if the flights would be a lot cheaper on Southwest but at least these phucking change fees would be better. I have changed my flight 3 times because of screw ups at work and now have paid about what a business class ticket would have cost. As of now though I don't care, just ready to relax in the ambiente de la meseta central.

The best deal out of Houston is Aeromexico. That early morning departure from San Jose sucks but its a lot cheaper than United.

$540.21 vs. $882

I'd probably still fly United even if SW went to SJO. Not a fan of SW overall, but I think competition is good for business. Keeps the industry on it's toes.

Ditto, I phucking hate Southwest. I'd rather ride a cattle truck thru Mexico, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Will do the Aeromexico in the future though.

I totally agree, ( that "dumb-ass boarding system" I nominate this for the quote of the year).

Love free market checks and balances. Too bad the airlines don't really operate in a free market.

I like flying Southwest for Business. Flying Hobby to Luv field is a whole lot better than IAH to DFW.
I also like the way you can change your flight without paying a big fee like at United, and they still serv peanuts.

Is this why flights from IAH to SJO are off the charts - United's monopoly? I've been trying to plan my first trip there and the airfare is anywhere from $800 - $1,000 from CA. I'm still waiting to find the right deal, otherwise at those prices it's about the same to AC or BKK.

All I know is that my yearly trip past June only cost about $650. A year/merger later I'm staring at $850. Mind you, the domestic flights I make are largely unchanged. Something is wrong here.

Well here you go:

http://aviationblog.dallasnews.com/2012 ... obby.html/

Mind you, this is only one of many, many articles about this today, but council passed this by a 16-1 vote. Go figure that the one vote against was from the councilman with IAH in his district. Also, this still will need to get FAA approval, but that shouldn't be a problem. And, the supposedly 1300 jobs lost at IAH should be made back up at Hobby now, and the United jobs at IAH weren't safe anyway, as they try to moove more and more of their operations to the home office in Chicago.

And for those who do not want to fly SW, well, you should at least thank them when your United flight is about 2-3 hundred less in a couple of years. United has stated that they will remain competitive in the Houston market. I like the "will remain" part, as what they really mean is, they will have to "become" competitive now, as they will finally have competition.

I am willing to bet that by 2015 one will be able to fly to Costa Rica on a SW no frills flight for around $450-$550 dependig on season. You will probably have to pay a $100 premium make the same flight on United. United will probably still charge about the same as now for a first or business class flight, as there will be no competition from SW for luxury seats.

I am happy, as I would be willing to fly in the belly of a cargo plane if it would get me to SJO for under $600 all in.

Thank you Southwest and Houston City Council

Bhuey, I hope you're correct. If the difference in cost is $100 between SW and United, I'd still take United. But nonetheless, competition is a GREAT thing.

Great Fricking news!!!!! United lost their monopoly. Southwest has been approved for international flights from Hobby airport in Houston. Although flights will not start until 2015, this is great news for consumers. The bubble has burst!!! I am so happy!!

Although I don't plan to return to Costa Rica due to the draconian smoking ban, flights to other Latin America destinations will fall with competition. This is good for all consumers using the Houston hub.

Hopefully flights to Dominican Republic will also be more attractive.
