100% agree. There is no "right" way to use "tica" or "chica" for "puta". Personally I take the time to attempt to educate CRT brothers of the distinction between the two words because using "chica" as an euphemism for "whore" probably won't land you into an altercation with ticos, whereas at least in one case (witnessed by yours truly) using "tica" as an synonym for puta made the ticos quite upset with the gringo, who as a result almost got his ass kicked.
As I've said before, if after being told folks still want to continue to use "tica" when they mean "puta", by all means be my guest. At least they're not doing it out of ignorance.

No they are proving their ignorance - how many times do you have to touch a hot stove to know it burns - its really offensive (as you point out) to ticos, and with good reasons - why would you want to be stoopid
