Not that anybody dosen't deserve to make alot of money, but your post is not accurate at all. I'm in the IT industry. The site costs no more than $100 a month to rent (a little more than the the price of a high end dedicated server rental). Its running free forum software and is barely updated. Off the advertising alone, this site makes a great profit. Some of the 'free members' here contribute the best content. 'Vegas Bob' comes to mind. 'Seahawk' is another one. The list goes on. Sad that it has come to this sort of 'division'.
Just moderating a forum of this size requires quite a lot of time. I know... i run a few websites of my own. And I doubt very much that add revenue generates much income here. More likely, the lion's share of profits are from fees paid via the VIP sponsors arrangements.
I find it funny when people just quote server costs as the be all and end all of websites. There's a hell of a lot more involved then just that. Again, ill say that it's not required that all members here pay, but it is in everyone's best interests when those who have benefited help support the site with a membership.
But then again, there's a substantial number of members who's primary goal in mongering in CR involves paying as little money as possible ... so why should a website rank any higher on those peoples lists of priorities, lol.
Pay of don't pay. Nobody has gun to anyone's head here. This is almost as inane a discussion as whether to tip or not, IMO.
