Can I still have a good time if I don't speak any Spanish? I am Canadian so we learn French. :)

Don't worry, you will still get some stanky on your Canadian hangdown without hablando Espanol. Speaking Spanish without question enhances the experience though.

If you stay in the San Jose or tourist areas you will have no problem not knowing any Spanish. Most of the Ticas know enough English to get by, or have a girlfriend who can translate for you. I have been coming to San Jose for three years now and don't know any Spanish other than a few words and it hasn't been a problem for me.

I propose we change Canada's 2 official languages from English and French to English and Spanish.

I second that. Met some ladies from Mexico in Europe a couple years ago and loved listening to them talk.

Plus within a few trips down, you'll pick up some Spanish by osmosis. You might consider any one of the fine language schools in CR--study intensively in half-day sessions, party the rest of the time. Time and finances permitting, of course. Not that expensive and provides "cover" for your trips, should you need the help.

The title of your thread should be the start of the overwhelming majority of posts on CRT - almost like a famous starting line of a novel:

"It was the best of times, it was the wortst of times" (Dickens, A Tale of two Cities)

"Call me Ishmael" (Melville, Moby Dick)

   :P :P

Seriously - if you have any fluency in French, you can pick up Spanish fairly easily - I saw this all the time when I attended a language school in CR in 2004; French speakers (mostly b/c of the similarity in grammar and many word origins) were speaking Spanish w/in weeks.

It will be my first trip so I don't see myself sitting in any classes learning Spanish. My only lessons with be one-on-one tutoring and clothing optional. Cash tends to speak to all so it will work out. Plus, flight and hotel are booked.

Pick up a Latin American Spanish phrasebook-dictionary, Lonely Planet actually has a Costa Rica version. Learn the basics (it's easy as Spanish is a phonetic language) and you'll already have a big advantage.

Can you have fun even though you don't speak Spanish? Yes! Most mongers speak very little Spanish and they do not have any problem. If you speak French, you should be able to learn some basic Spanish quickly. :)

Kinda tough to answer this question if you ask me because I guess most answers should come from a p4p or mongering stand point. If your begging for a flat yea or no answer; Do you have to know spanish to get laid or have fun in CR..

Answer: No, you do not need to know spanish to get business fugged in CR... :|
