Yes, train noise is a BIG issue at Scotland as they will be waking you up about 6am daily. The old side is very worn down but new side is more expensive. Don't use the phone, they really gouge you on the billing of telephone calls and I'm talking local, don't even think about calling the states from their phones. Charge big money to do your laundry and aren't very helpful... But just my experience, lot of people enjoy the stay there...

I agree with PVT

I stayed in the old building and it has seen better days, I would call it OK at best

The location is great... easy walk to the store and ten minutes to town max, and it is easy to get a cab down at the corner.

It is a good place to start, it had dishes and silverware, a rusty fry pan and old pot and a mr coffee with no urn????... getting fresh towels and the sheets changed was a chore... so be prepared to go it own yor own

But to the chicas it is like a Hiton it had hot water most of the time

Now I may not paint a very nice picture of the place, but I have my reasons

I was going to return to the Scotland for the month of April

Why go back??? It is cheap and a couple of chicas I see will not go to gulch hotels

I had mailed in my deposit, then I get a phone call from the owner, He is returning my deposit, acording to the on-site staff, I had trashed the place and they do not want me back.

I tell him that they have me mixed up with someone else, they checked out my apt the day I left and returned my deposit

He says OK and I give him the dates of the Dec visit so the staff can go back and see my passport copy???

I do not hear back from him for several days and am thinking about $250 depoist money he has

I get ahold of him on the phone, not that easy??? He says that they we waiting for me to mail them a picture of myself WTF to where Costa Rica???

He did return my money, thought he might keep that to cover the damages from the first visit? He said I was welcome to go by the place and clear it up in person, but for now he had to stay on the side of the staff

I have a hunch that there is something up at the Scotland not sure what that is

Like I said great location, the train is an issue, but I get up early

Proceed at your own risk and have an eye out for new digs

thanks for the intel.
like you said, it's a good place to start, and finding a place from chicago seems like it would be difficult.
i never sleep past 6am, so i don't think the train will be a problem. though i hope to learn to sleep a little later after i retire.
is the scotland a transiant type place that usually has vacancies or are the majority of residents long term?
how far in advance should a reservation be made to be in the newer building.
sorry for all the questions. thanks again.
