When I was in CR back in march, it was my understanding that a guy named William took over the Hemingway. He is a pretty cool guy, ( always wears very dark shades), and a guy named Barry was opening a cantina in the inside courtyard. On the grand opening of the cantina, they were raided and shutdown,(just the cantina), for lack of liquor license. Anyone know of new news on this?

It seems you don't care much for this place though it is less clear whether that is based on some actual 1st hand experience or whether you're just repeating impressions that you've heard in the past (probably well pre-dating the takeover of the place by new management). Have you actually stepped inside the place since it was taken over by new management to see for yourself? In any event, to call the place a "toilet" seems a bit extreme, don't ya think?

While you might not care for it all that much, at least some other guys have reported that the place is not that bad or even pretty good for the money, which hardly squares with your description of the place as a "toilet". Perhaps, it would have been much fairer to simply say that the majority of previous reports on the place have not been particularly favorable and that as a result few guys around here have actually stayed there recently (and so probably aren't really in a position to answer SpeakNo's question one way or the other). It would also probably would have been much fairer to allow that maybe, just maybe, with the relatively recent takeover of operations by new management and the investment by the new owners of money for remodeling and updating, that the place may not be nearly as bad as it was reported to be in the past.

SpeakNo, I can't answer your question myself but here is a recent (highly favorable) review of the place by Chiefthunderpants who actually stayed there recently, perhaps even after the grand opening of the cantina that you were asking about http://costaricaticas.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=34482. So you might want to check with him to see if he knows anything about it.

I met Will and partied with him a bit when he arrived. I met Flanigan too. It seemed to me to be a typical gringo story: come down, party, visions of ganazias dancing in their dreams, then, tico reality sinks in. But in subsequent trips Will disappeared from the gulch, and I heard good things. An acquaintance rented a room there for a month, so I went over to see the place. Will was there, found out he's married to a tica, nice clean place, it is an older building with lots of ambiance, great if you have a tica girlfriend who you want to impress with class or or more interested in getting to know. Overall I was impressed with the place. Seems like Will is making a go of it.

While staying at the Castillo a few months back, I met Flannigan at the out door bar. He says he is part owner of the Hemmingway. A friendly guy, but, wow, that dude can put back the beers

I stayed there 4 nights in January 2010, and thought it was fine for the money. "Economy" room was about $30/night. No carpet, etc., but I don't like to spend a lot on hotels. CRT discount is supposed to waive "lady" fees, but the desk girl (who didn't know any better) charged me, but management refunded me the next day.
I would stay there again.
