We are staying in San Jose and would like to go scuba diving some where close. Was wondering if anyone had and recommendations? Would also need transportation to the diveshop or dive resort from san Jose and back.

There are about 135 mentions of Scuba Diving here. You'll find though that Google yields better results. Here's a commercial outfit: http://www.costaricadiving.com/
Here's the CR Govt. tourist site: http://www.govisitcostarica.com/categor ... panies.asp

The best site for everything everywhere is http://www.tripadvisor.com --a query there should get you a flood of info. Free registration but a barrage of ads. More specifically:

My 2 colones: check scubadiving.com. If you don't find a dive report that is to your liking, consider going to Coz or Caymans for the diving and stick to chicas in CR.
Quarry divers are thrilled to be in open water, but for me it has to have 100-200 feet of vis and deep deep walls and warm water. That's why I don't dive in CR.

Agreed that there is better diving to be had, but I have seen some extreme fish life up close and personal; schools of rays, sharks, lots of turtles etc. So, I will always remember diving there with fondness. :D

If you really like Scuba Diving..the only place I would dive is coco island off of the costa rica...been there and is one of the best in the world..but take a day and half to get there, and must live on boat for a week or 10 days

If you are new to CR and want to let someone else do the research, then I would suggest staying at the Del Rey and having their girl look things up for you. I'm not up on the scuba here, but they set me up with a fishing trip to Playa Herradura (pacific side) last year and also the transportation. The cab ride there was like 2 hrs and he stayed all day and waited for me to take me back and the total was only $80 US for the cab. (I gave him a good tip of course!)
