Okay, My Reservations are made for SL, flight is paid, reservations for a couple nights in Jaco (over a weekend), I am reading, and reading, and prepping, and paid for a membership :)

I have spanish to english apps ready to go on my iPhone, maps downloaded, and will be trying to practice some before I go.

Couple of questions that have basically arose because of so much info from all over: (and yes I have used and continue to use the search link)

1. I understand its better to negotiate in CR currency (not sure of colon vs colonies yet). True/False?

2. Cien ($100 or 50,000c? [...which is better given the exchange rate]) is the rate for 3hrs? How about overnight (this is where I was confused, thought I saw somewhere 100-180 nite how much in CR currency?)? My preference is overnight if the expectation is I can get some 2am and/or 8am action.

3. Based on your previous reply to my post, would it just be better to pick someone up in Jaco? Of course this gives me the option of just R&R on the beach without a tag-along. If the options are there (attractive), then this seems to be the way to go. Plus I can find something to do on the water for a day.

4. I noticed VIP discount for a service that goes from San Jose - Jaco and back. Is this basically the same thing as the Interbus link you posted (but more expensive). Any benefits of Interbus vs taxi vs service? If not, then the winner would seem to be interbus (bus just has a bad conotation - looks to be more like a van :) ).

Thank you for clarifying or pointing me to a missed post.

There are some pretty good people on this sight and some true veterans so you'll get a buffet of answers. Although not quite a rookie, I'm not quite a veteran either. Here's my opinion:

1. Negotiations are a fluid thing. Some girls prefer dollars so they don't spend it that night. Others prefer colons. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Have money in your pocket. I usually carry all colons on me.

2. You might not want an all night excursion. Get to the SL. It's not a matter of "if" you're gonna get lucky. It's more a matter of how many times are you gonna get lucky. When you're a rookie you get too anxcious and pay whatever they say. As you become more experienced, you get much better at the negociation process. I have negotiated for just an hour and sometimes it lasts all night long. Have fun, relax, and know some spanish.

3. Been to Jaco. I liked it, but I've been to better beaches. People are nice and I really enjoyed myself at Clarita's. Good bartenders, reasonable rates, inexpensive food. At night you have a buffet of women at the Beatle Bar. Something for everyone. Careful, the women are used to people with tons of money that came around to fish. You don't have to bring someone to Jaco.

4. Search around the sight for transportation. When I booked Claritas, I asked them for transportation and they gave me a perfect taxi for $90.

The best piece of advice that was given to me was don't set any plans in stone. Go with the flow. Don't be afraid to break plans in Jaco if you're having a great time in SJ. You can do a lot of day activities in SJ. Ask people questions on the board. These guys are great.

Learning Spanish would be your best asset. Bring a sense of humor and you'll be set. You don't have to alpha dog it in CR. If people can tell you're having fun, it can be contagious.

Whatever you do...Don't fall in love!!!!

Enjoy!

The Mariott is by the airport away from downtown. When you say friendly are you asking "chica friendly?"

I believe they charge a chica fee i'm not sure how much.

You may want to pick another hotel closer to downtown san jose.

Two hotels not mentioned by Brother Orange because "new" to us are the Hotel Dunn Inn and the Hotel Freebird. Both are eminently SEARCHable here; both excellent though different venues.

Thanks for this comprehensive guide.
Having made a similar one on a Thai based board, I know that a fair amount of efforts went in to it.

Having done nearly 20 trips to Thailand, it is time to explore Latin America.
I did my first trip to Brazil 6 months ago (Trip Report Here for anyone interested)
Next will be Costa Rica, scheduled for a 4-day memorial day weekend.

Will keep on reading so that I'll hopefully be somewhat informed.
One thing I have notices in the bit of reading is that there seem to be lesser emphasis on overnight (LT) than 1-2 hour ST encounters.
Personally I like a ST during the day as well as an overnight guest every night.
Also, I am not much of a late night owl and prefer to be back at the hotel between midnight and 1AM and also prefer to girl to stay at least to the mid-morning hours so that I can get a couple of morning rounds in.
I am certain all this can be negotiated.
I guess my question is whether this is out of the ordinary for SJO nightlife?
.... or did I just not read it right?

I am sure I will have more questions as I read more.

Here's a cheap shot--your "overnights" are called TLN ( Todo la noche) here. And yes, I've noticed the Brothers here are not so enamored of them as elsewhere--reason unknown--get it done and then out for more fun?

I'm a big fan of TLN (toda la noche) but I tend to see a girl at least a few times before I choose to do a TLN. Too many chicas will lift things from your room, so I like to establish a reasonable trust level first. Of course, by now I have several favoritas who I've been seeing every time I go down there, so they are my go-to girls for TLN right now. Of course, if you put your room into lockdown, a TLN is safe. Just make sure everything really important is locked in the safe, and everything else you don't care to lose is iin your suitcases with the locks on.

I suppose that may just be part of reality in CR, and I will make some provisions for that.
In LOS I must have had over 250 overnighters, 90% of which I met just hours before.
Other than large amounts of cash and passport, I have never locked anything away or hidden it for that matter.
Always leave camera, phones, computer petty cash, etc. on the desk.
Maybe I have been too lucky, because I have never lost anything, neither to the girls not the maids.

I very rarely get with the same girl twice in one trip.
On occasion I will look up the best of the best at successive trips.
Too easy to fall in love and variety is the spice.

Is it fair to say that TLN will set you back about twice the amount that an hour or two will?
For those who take overnighters back to the hotel, are they usually agreeable to stay to mid-morning?
