Hola Gentlemen,

Just FYI, If you are flying to Mexico, Central or South American on Continental over the holidays, you better make sure you know about the baggage embargo. They will not accept more than 2 checked bags and they cannot be over 50 lbs each unless you are a first class passenger. I offered to pay for the excess weight and even tried to check a third bag but I couldn't because of the "baggage embargo". I had never heard of this until this morning at DFW!!! I just wanted to give you guys a heads up. Buena suerte!

Interesting development. Do you know how long this embargo is supposed to last? Usually CO will put this sort of information on its website and currently, there is no notice of an embargo. The current baggage information is located here: http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/co ... check.aspx

The current policy should allow for FC passengers to carry 3 bags of 75 pounds eace; elite passengers should be allowed to carry two bags of 75 pounds each.

Ciaociao

This may be fairly common on most airlines going in and out of these areas. Spirit has had a 1checked bag limit since Dec 1 and it lasts till Jab 10.

AFAICR Continental has always limited coach passengers to two checked bags of 50 pounds, though they have allowed up to 75 pounds with an overweight fee.

Can only believe they anticipate full-flights with all avoirdupois-challenged passengers AND they are running the least fuel they can get away with. Not that that matters if they overshoot the runway on landing...

Check the airline's checked baggage details on their website.
All of the airlines that I have seen that fly to SA have these restrictions listed.

I guess that the passengers tend to travel "heavy" at this time of year?

Actually it is not a weight problem as much as a space problem. Beside passengers carrying more then usual with Christmas gifts there is a heavy cargo demand. Aerocasillas sent a notice to all it's customers last week that they are encountering delays sending packages from their Miami warehouse because the airlines lack sufficient space to accommodate everything as expeditiously as usual.

Glad am I that somebody's got some loose cash to spend and are keeping the wheels of commerce greased...not entirely a joke.

I can't even imagine taking more than 100 lbs of luggage somewhere, unless I was moving there

I know, I've seen some little darlings take a purse weighing more than they do just to go to the bathroom!

From what I understand, these embargoes are placed by the customs of the country in question, not the airline. I may be wrong though.

I got around this once by taking one of my huge bags as a carry-on and then gate-checking it.
