Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day when on vacation. :D I ate at Soda Amon the first morning and it was quite good for the price. The next day I tried the breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn. It was quite good but $16 is excessive for breakfast.   I also did McDonalds a few times on the pedestrian walk. Just like in the states the service was slow and the order always wrong. :( Finally tried the Del Mar buffet for about $10.50. Wish I had tried it from day one. I like to get up early for breakfast and they open at 6am, which works for me. :D Plus they have everything a gringo could desire for breakfast and CNN playing on the flatscreen! I would have liked to have tried Mac's American Bar but they are a little out of the way from the gultch for breakfast. Maybe next time.

McDonald's for breakfast, is not too bad sometimes. I often stop at the one on Central Avenida for breakfast. I have found the young people working there to be quite friendly and efficient.

While I like an American-style breakfast (what exactly is that?), I think it's equally satisfying to eat as the locals do. I got used to rice and beans as part of a balanced breakfast early on, and now I enjoy some gallo pinto with a little sour cream on top along with my huevos revueltos, tocina and pan tostada.

The good thing is this: If you eat like a tico, you'll find numerous little sodas around the Gulch that offer inexpensive, filling breakfasts. Instead of dropping $10.00 at the del Mar, you could spend half of that and get filled up. Fresh fruit is cheap, coffee is cheap, tortillas and gallo pinto are cheap. Desfrute!
El C, I completely agree with you on this, except I normally skip the tocina and accompany mine with platanos maduras and sprinkle my Gallo with a little Lizano Hot Sauce. Cost is actually more like 1/3 or less of what an American Breakfast costs at the Del Mar

BTW, if you ever go to Thailand and want to eat like a local there you should really try their traditional brakfast meal called "Johk". Its a thick rice porridge cooked in chicken broth with a few chunks of chicken or other meat, some fresh shredded ginger and, if you pay a little extra the street vendor will crack an egg into the soup but that ends up being only partly cooked. It sounds a little scary, I skip the egg, but it is actually quite tasty and very filling. Its a great way to start the day, and at 50-60 baht costs you less than $2. I actually like it even more for when I go to Thailand than I like Gallo Pinto when I go to CR.

If you're looking for Traditional American breakfasts, I highly recommend the Presidente and the Colonial. Both are really top notch American Breakfasts. Good quality.

Made a return visit this morning (after a so-so experience several months ago), HAD TO BE THE BEST BREAKFAST I'VE HAD HERE EVER!! You'll need a taxi ride from the gulch. Go with 2 or 3 pals and split the cost of the cab ride and go on Sundays to the San Jose Palacio (it's just off the highway from Sabana to the main airport, 3 minutes from the Nissan agency and the Corobici Hotel. Ask for the American breakfast, not the buffet. Then you serve yourself at the buffet with huge portions of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, fresh rolls, OJ and coffee brought by the waitstaff. The buffet is $15.00 BUT the American breakfast is about $7.00. Can't be beat. One caveat, get there before 10am because the food is more plentiful and still hot.

yeah, never eaten that gallo pinto. First time I tried it it tasted way too bland. After 3 times, I managed to get flavor out of it. I've found myself craving here at home. Oh..And SOO TRUE...a typical tico breafast will keep you from feeling hunger sometimes even past noon. And that's good, cause down there, you don't have time to worry alot about things like eating.

The Castillo has a free breakfast that's okay but has no meat. But they also serve an American Breakfast for $4. Two eggs, bacon and sausage, toast and potatoes. Mighty good. They also make good omelets. I actually liked it better than the buffet at the Del Mar. :D
