I do believe what Herman said is true . Question for LDK : Did they mention the cancel policy on the phone at the time of your reservation ? If not you can dispute the charge with the Credit Card company. I would talk to True Sportsman first to give him a chance. It is always better to work it out if you can.

Seems strange that after True Sportsman posted in an attempt to work the situation out Lemon Drop K*D has not been heard dropping lemons on this post anymore.

If you do not realize Lemon, True Sportsman is Bill the owner of the place.

Has there been a resolution between the two of you??? Please let us know what has happened.

Bill,

Please accept my apologies for not reading the reservation policy you have at the web site. before making my call.

As you know, we have planned on staying at your hotel. This is our first choice hotel in San Jose. if the mix up did not happen you know we would have been staying there.

Once again, I ask for your understanding in this matter and hope that our frantic decision making, would not deter you from opening your doors to us in the future. Thank you for the Full Refund you have given us.

Sincerely,
Lemon Drop Kidd[/b]

Maybe you can edit the title of this post. Bill is such a Great host and the Sportsmans is such a favorite place of ours that this post seemed very harsh.

Some of us make reservations months and even a year in advance. Its a no winning situation for the hotel. From the minute you make the reservation, they turn other business away. And you surely EXPECT that room to be waiting for you when you arrive. But when you cancel, they can't go back and retrieve that business they turned away. Sometimes they will get a last minute customer to fill that room but that is not a given.

Talk about wanting your cake and eating it too and in this case someone else's.

That's the root for all these problems booking rooms months, years in advance yet they don't even have flight bookings. SL is good to CRT members, yet some abused the situation. and the brothers that have flight reservation could not get any rooms cause they will book weeks in advance, then the months and years reservation will call before 72 hours and cancel, in which SL they get burn.

IMHO

In my eight trips to CR I have always stayed at the SL. Bill, his Dad, the staff, and the ladies are the best.

For me it is very simple. I find out from them six to eight months ahead what is available, and then schedule my vacation time around their availability. Just as I have already booked my stay in MDE for November. It works for me anyway. Fortunately, I have a very flexible vacation schedule for my two weeks vacation that some of you may not be able to schedule that far out.

Thank heavens everyone is different, but for me if the SL is not available, I'm not going to San Jose. :D

Health & happiness to all.....

It kind of gives " Happy Ending " a new meaning....at least on this board.

Don't think so. I don't know Bill

With the choices of Hotel at Barrio Amon, I'm willing to try others. I love SL for the peace and quite at night. But with the La Amistad, Dunns Inn and Castillo which I can stay for lesser per night rate and would not give me some bullshit like this. I rather stay there! That's great that you guys know the Owner I don't. this had happen to me at the Castillo few months back that I have to change my reservation, and it was handle differently, so don't tell me cause its a small Hotel..blah blah blah Castillo is much smaller, if you still love it that's great more power to you. I'm posting my experience.

Clearly posted on their website is the following...
For any guaranteed reservation accepted by Sportsmens Lodge and secured by your posted credit card information, there is a $50 cancellation fee when you cancel before 72 hours of your reservation date. After the 72 hour reservation period prior to your date of check in, the cancellation fee is %50 of the entire reserved stay to the credit card you use for guaranteeing your reservation. This is backed by the laws of the Federal Govenment of the Untied States of America, Canada, the European Union countries and the Costa Rica Municipalidad.

Notes
This rates not included taxes
Rates indicated include Continental breakfast.

Yes, it happens to suck for you but it is what it is. By the way, guys here are encouraging you to talk to Bill the owner and it may get taken care of, if you're not willing to take their advice then so be it. One less person to compete with for a room at SL 8)

For starters the $50 cancellation fee outside of 3 days is bull.....Im in the hotel business and I have never heard of any cancellation fees like this outside of 3 days. The part that says "this is backed by the laws of the federal gov. of the united states yada yada yada" thats bull also. There is no such laws here in the United States thats says this is ok. Say, I book a room athe SL for 6 months from now and my plans change and I have to cancel say 5 months out. They are going to charge me $50? Think not.......stay at the Amistad........

I think the point is that he is now satisfied and Bill (as expected) took care of the situation.

Because the reality is most of us don't care about the legalities of the hotel business unless there's a problem. There was, and it was quickly resolved.

Any attempt to persuade guys to ditch SL for the Amistad is a joke. This is not a knock on the Amistad but a reminder that the SL is what it is because Bill is a consumate professional and guys who have been around know this.

My mistake, after re-reading your original post I see that you stated that you cancelled your entire stay, therefore you would not have a check out statement. I apologize. Manfred and my Manager Carlos explained to me the following cancellation fee that was charged.

The reservation was for a Junior Suite 3 nights at $99+ taxes and for a Standard Deluxe at $89+ taxes also for three nights. After your call on the night before your scheduled arrival with the cancellation, we charged you for the less expensive room $89 x 3 = $267 which is less than the stated policy calls for of 1/2 of the entire stay. I will be glad to discuss this with you personally during your next trip to Costa Rica and perhaps work something out with you.

Thanks,

Bill

So, he ended up paying for 2 differnt hotels for 3 nights..He should have just stayed at SL to begin with if we was gonna have to pay for it regardless........

I apologize....i posted these last 2 comments before I realized LDK was refunded his money.......Thats was very admirable and the right thing for Bill to do. Now the SL has at least 2 more customers for the future, LDK and me, when I decide to go down.....

okiemike,
Nothing personal, but I've been following along with your posts over the past few weeks since you joined, and I'm not sure that you're ready for CR yet. IMO, there seems to be a sort of paranoia / negativity in many of your responses on different threads. Just go with the flow, use common sense and you'll have a great time in SJO. Enjoy your trip.
