This was posted on a Yahoo discussion group that deals with Costa Rica.

Just a heads up to users of the orange airport taxis; AS of about 10
days ago, the airport taxis have been required to use marias also.
There is no longer the fixed prepay arrangement that worked so well for
so many years. The inside window/office is now usuallly not manned so
one should continue on to the outside and there will be met by the
uniformed taxi people who will get you the size of cab or microbus you
need.

With all you guys who have come into town this week for the big birthday bash has anyone used the orange cab? Can anyone confirm this post?*

* Please do not respond unless you have actually ridden in an airport orange cab in the past week. Phoenix Rising will get upset if you do.

I did not arrive by orange airport cab, but I asked another gringo this morning who arrived several days ago. He said he took an orange airport cab to the Castillo from the airport. There was a meter running in the cab, and it cost $20.

I don't believe this was a matter of "forced" to use meters. I think the airport taxi companies have been wanting meters for a long time, but were not allowed to (because they are only authorized for trips to/from the airport, meters would allow them to take fares from anywhere to anywhere).

I believe I read somewhere that they were allowed to start using meters as part of some larger initiative that the taxi companies agreed to in order to be ble to use meters.

Actually there were forced to use the meters. ARSEP told them were supposed to have been using meters and ordered them to use them over a year ago and they did not comply. A couple of months ago ARSEP gave them a deadline to comply.

Seeing the posts here about what the metered fare has run I can see why they preferred the flat rate.

The orange cab from the airport that SuperB and I used last Friday did not use the meter. But since I did not pay at the window I asked the driver how much it was going to cost (We were going to both Morazan and Amistad), he replied $23 which was in the ball park of recent visits so I said that was fine.
