The larger La Criollita up near the INS bldg and near the Namu Art gallery is VERY nice. Great food, ultra clean, nice artwork on the walls and a great little sheltered outdoor bar in their courtyard.

Ultra Clean? Guess if you can get past the mice eating the bird seed in the aviary, about 2 feet from your table, you could say that

I've seen plenty of dogs licking their butts and balls, but I don't remember ever seeing a cow accomplish that same feat. Anyway, even if they did, they peel or cut the surface area including all the taste buds off the tongue meat before serving. I recall doing that myself as a K*D whenever my family prepared tongue (it is considered a delicacy in jewish cooking usually served with lots of mustard, yum). Actually, it is kind of a pain to prepare yourself and is best had as a dish when you go out (as in a jewish deli sandwich or en salsa at latino restaurants). I think it really is quite good and everyone should really try it.

Re: any mice? Screw that. There you go ID with that negativity again. If truth be told there are probably mice scurrying around most restaurants in CR. Do you think the cat at Mariscar is there just as a pet rather than to do a job? And there was even a report of mice being spotted at higher end places like the Del Mar. As long as those mice are only eating bird seed rather than getting into the ingredients they serve me, I can deal with it.

I think the setting in the back courtyard at La Criollitta is a wonderful place to spend a relaxed lunch. The key is to avoid the lunch crowd by NOT going there between 12 and 1 when it gets quite packed and hard to get a table in the back.

Now boys, stop fighting or you won't get any tongue.

Mice is nice. Hey, you probably would freak out at the variety of critters which inhabits your local restaurants in the States. A good friend, now deceased had a very successful pest control business in Minneapolis. Mice, rats, bats, the occasional squirrel, roaches, ants, sand fleas, silverfish, sow bugs, centipedes can all be commonly found in U.S. kitchens. As Prolijo points out, as long as the pests don't come in contact with food or utensils, you're probably okay. :)

Of course, there's no guarantee that Pixie and Dixie aren't supplementing their birdseed diet with rice, bread crumbs and other delicacies found in the kitchen.... but it's a risk I'm willing to take. :)

BTW, I'm still not clear about the location. I'm getting Av. 7 west of c. 7, south side of the street...right? :?

Guys, I have eaten in both Criollita Restaurants this week. the little one 50 feet from the corner of ZB is great and cheap. However you should know that they have two menus. The English menu has higher prices than the Spanish menu.[edit]

I refuse to frequent any place that charges gringos more for the same food. That's just plain wrong.

Can you imagine if a place here in the U.S. started having a menu that charged more for their Latino clientele? No doubt they'd be sued by the ACLU and etc..

I've had a restaurant actually charge me gringo price (more) even though the menu was in Spanish and the price was stated. When I complained, he said, "Oh, that's an old menu. The new menu is higher." I never went back there. They have to learn that we won't tolerate being ripped off, or else they'll (some of them will) keep doing it.

Seems to be quite common in most of latin america.

They often don´t seem to grasp certain concepts well, like if you don´t screw me out of $1 today, I might spend enough in here to give you $10 profit tomorrow, then you have $9 more dollars than if you had not screwed me.

oh well...I suppose there are many a thread on here about this particular culturual phenom. Some kind of live for the moment, now is everything philosophy i guess.

Now, as to the Conan comment:

Scaring me Conan...I dont rub my finger on one and then the other, so can´t make the jump you can here. Always a good reminder tho that people like you are out there, sometimes I forget, thanks bro. You don´t think the CR gals?, no..no..at least not the ones that I....maybe just some of the cooks.

I've eaten there on many occasions and got the same lunch specials that everybody else got. I've never spoken English there though, so that may be part of the problem. When I lived in Austria some restaurants had "English" menus that were dictionary word by word translations that were hilarious.
