I'm curious as to what you all do regarding buying travel medical insurance.

From which company do you buy it? Do you buy a policy that includes trip interruption/cancellation and other travel inconveniences as well as medical emergencies? Thanks.

My individual BLUE CROSS / BLUE SHIELD policy will cover me while traveling. Clinica Biblica once told me they would accept it for an overnight stay.

I know a big selling tool for these travel insurance companies, is that they say a medical air evacuation back to the states can run in the $20,000 to $30,000 range......apparently, an emergency air ambulance can be had for as little as $4000.....as was indicated in a recent post that featured a news article about a gringo who was in need of a medical evacuation back to the states.

Several years ago, I signed up for the American Express Medical Insurance. For $109 a year, I receive $100,000 coverage while on a trip in a foreign country. The policy includes medical transportation as well.

I get the TravelGuard Basic package to cover stuff like trip interruption, etc. as well as a supplement to my Aetna Health Insurance. To me it's cheap enough "peace of mind". Never had to use it but then I haven't traveled all that much either. $60 a pop.

One of 47million in the USA without health insurance.....PERIOD.

NO FUN living on the edge......but lucky to have assets to cover up to a point....still....no damn health insurance and am disgusted by the fact the USA don't have it.....it's all over the rest of the world....why not the USA? Germany? yes. Netherlands? yes. France? yes. Sweden? yes. United Kingdom? yes. Canada? yes. etc., etc., etc., etc. Don't ask my M.D. brother, either.....he has all manner of reasons why there is no universal health care in the USA....and that guy lives LARGE...and how.....(of course, he's owned, bought and sold....has to act a certain way all the time, blah, blah, blah.....hahahahahhahahahaa......he PAYS for the money he gets).

If something goes all wrong when in CR.....tell it to the chaplain, please.

Being single and without "heirs".....I got a gaggle of nephews and neices who think they're going to inherit from the odd guy uncle.....

WRONG!

Simply wondering what your political rant has to do with the question. We don't do politics here and for good reason.

Paid $24 every trip I take. Just in case. You can get sick before a trip, death in the family, etc; covers may unfortunate acts that can occur before a trip, during a trip and return. Just $24 for some peace of mind. Some people tip more than that for lousy service. IMHO, worth it.

Sounds good. Where/from whom do you buy this insurance?

Good question.

Do you need travel insurance?
How good is your health insurance at home, what credit cards do you carry and the infamous question…how good is your credit???
Or do you have access to $100,000 international cash with 24 hours notice.

Sooo… what if I have a heart attack while phucking some girl in LOS  … believe it or not, I have thought about this while spending time at the gym sweating on the elliptical machine    …what would happen to me ?

So, I asked my health insurance agent (I have a policy with Blue Cross CA), and… I would be covered… and my automatic Visa card travel insurance (most cards have some type) will cover most deductibles, medical and auto, if I used it to pay for the plane ticket, car rental and/or hotel… peace of mind…well sort of.

The reality is that when you check out of a hospital in most foreign countries they want cash, travelers check, or credit card… no such thing as billing your insurance company or yourself… you will get reimbursed by whomever/whatever, but they want to be paid before you leave the country. If you buy a policy, make sure it will provide instant payment to a foreign hospital or yourself. If you plan to use your current coverage (like me), make sure your cc limit (with a call or two) will cover your hospital bill and get you home.

I always try to fly Continental and they offer it to you as soon as you book your flight. AA also.

I buy trip insurance for each trip although it would probably be cheaper if I bought it for a year each time. I have Blue Cross,so medical costs aren't my main worry. I buy the insurance as a hedge aganst the small chance that I may get sick or injured and may need a $40,000 air medivac flight home.
Don't leave home without it.
