You would think they would take this into account, one of the SHORTEST Int'l airport runway's in the world.

The airport's single runway is 1,863 m (6,112 feet) in length and is at an altitude of 1,004 m (3,294 feet). Boeing 757s are the largest aircraft that can land at Toncontín, as it is one of the shortest international runways in the world.

From the article Orange posted above:

The airport was built on the southern edge of hilly Tegucigalpa in 1948 with a runway less than 5,300 feet, shorter than that of a small field such as Municipal Airport in Goldsboro, North Carolina.

The altitude of 3,300 feet forces pilots to use more runway on landings and takeoffs than they would at sea level. And because of the hills, pilots have to make an unusually steep approach.

From Airliners.net:

The runway at TGU is only 6,132 ft (1869 m) long. The airport was built on a plateau in the city. Tegucigalpa itself is situated in a basin between several tall mountains. This unique location allows for some spectacular approaches and interesting landings.

Because of the short runway as soon as the plane crosses the fence separating the airport property and the highway, it must make contact. The runway has a “displaced threshold” leaving only 5,436 ft (1657 m) of useable landing runway. That short runway, coupled with a 1.06º downhill slope on runway 01, allows for little braking time.

It would seem there is some discrepancy in the exact length of the runway but it can be agreed it is short. Airliners.net says it is runway 01 while this report says it is 02. Lots of confusion at this early stage of the investigation.

I always fly into San Pedro Sula. Is the airport at SPS bigger and safer?

Thankfully, casualties weren't a lot higher than what's been reported.

Here's a pick of the plane: http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj31 ... 5438-1.jpg

And a video of a "normal" landing at this airport: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_z5HtME9n8

Look at that approach. There is no straight-in allowed because of the mountains.

According to aviation professionals witnessing the landing at the Toncontin airport the airplane touched down within the landing zone.

The deputy director of Aeronáutica Civil de Honduras, Boris Ferrera, said: "We believe, it could have been a mechanical failure. It is currently presumed, that it was a brakes failure." (not surprising that they would want to blame something other than the airport)

It just gets worse for Taca. The self-proclaimed "newest fleet in the Americas" may need a little maintenance.

As was pointed out in another thread commenting on the accident guys who can discern the cause of the accident from what they read should be working for the NTSB. Anything at this early stage is pure speculation that has no basis in fact. Both flight recorders were recovered, apparently intact, the NTSB has sent a team to help with the investigation so some months from now we will get the conclusion of what went wrong.

As far as Oranges comment "The self proclaimed "newest fleet in the Americas" may need a little maintenance  " it brings to mind (to paraphrase)" hell as no fury like a frequent flier scorned"
