A topic for discussion...fear and how far you let it push you.
I see soooo many threads these days about muggings, extortion, STDs etc. and the many varied replies and wonder, just how does fear play in our lives as mongers.
We see the perfect example when we try to get on our flight here. The current administration created the 'culture of fear' and we allowed civil and human rights to be trampled in the name of safety. Even to the point where they can use those 'border security' troopers to hold/question/send a message to an important diplomat like the Attorney General of Costa Rica!
While in Costa Rica, do you take taxis everywhere as some suggest, walk everywhere as others suggest or somewhere in between?
Another thread suggested you never eat pu*sy for fear of an STD. Others that suggest no tossed salad.

For me, I walk everywhere I can when I can. I take precautions and I'm not stupid so no troubles yet. But the day I do, and I'm sure I will, I take out everything I have and it's theirs. But I never carry more than about 10K anyway...
I eat pu*sy and it never fills me up. Not even here in CR. I'll just have to roll the dice on that one.
Now when it comes to real danger, like sex without a condom, then the fear is at a sufficient level to induce changes in my behaviour. But it's an informed decision not one made out of second hand info and speculation.
So I open this up for discussion...what is your fear threshold where your fear level is sufficient to change what you will or won't do??

Good topic, but you could have easily left politics out of it. Someone will latch onto that comment and this whole post will get trashed.

Fear sells!

I think of all the crap people buy, because advertising suggested that one thing or another is dangerous so buy the countermeasure.

One product really comes to mind. The toothbrush steamer/sterilizer didn't quite catch on, but the advertising was all about fear. If you didn't buy the steamer, you were possibly going to get 1 of 15 illnesses or diseases!

The bottled water industry's growth came mostly from fear - they implied tap water was harmful EVERYWHERE! The bottled water industry caught on that people were filling their small bottle at the hallway water cooler so I wonder who sponsored the study that said lots of gems were passed from doing this and also the study that said something about the reuse of bottles, due to the plastic, caused cancer. I forget the entire circumstances for cancer causing water bottles, but it was reported.

How about the shopping cart guard! After you put your K*D in the shopping cart, you can put a gem guard on the handle to protect your K*D. WOW!

The list goes on and on. Lots of products are sold in the name of fear.

Prostoner, I agree with everything you said. As I have said many times before, I may someday get mugged, rodded, maybe even beaten, but I am NOT GOING TO LIVE MY LIFE IN FEAR!!! I am going to do the things I like and enjoy doing-- Walking in SJ, riding buses everywhere I go, eating the food in local resturants, going to Tico bars, clubs, MPs, and EATNG pu*sy every chance I get  8) :D :D And I to draw the line when it come to sexo sin condom. I feel the chance of a problem with BBoral sex is minimual so Hell yes, gotta be  :P . BUT As much as I like the skin to skin contact, I do not see taking a chance with life just for that pleasure when the sexo con condom is still great.

D2864: I also agree with you in that a large part of all advertizing is based on fear and that millions is wasted, in the USA especially, every year on products mot needed--Hell how much of the bottled water has been proven to come right out of a public water supply and directly into the bottle????

What I do not agree with you on is your comment that Prostoner could have left politics out of his post :!: Hell the present administration has been selling and living on fear mongering for over 7 years; and has, as a result, caused North Americans to live in a totally fear based society where almost everything they do is fear based. How could you leave it out of the disscusion :?: :?

I too refuse to live in fear, but nevertheless you do have to take extra precautions any time you're in a foreign country. I've always preferred to walk everywhere as much as possible, but you do need to follow certain "rules of engagement" as was mentioned recently in another thread. Particularly if ever approached directly by anybody on the street that you don't know, DO NOT STOP and DO NOT engage them. And otherwise, just always be aware of your surroundings.

As for fear of STDs, this is one area that I do think is overplayed somewhat in the monger world. I'm not saying something can't happen, but look - I'm 50 years old, and I've never had an STD of any kind my entire life. And this is with some 400 sessions under my belt between CR and Rio, many of which included DATY, BBBJ, etc.

Live life to the fullest - 'cause when your number's up, it's over...

I think the amount that we allow fear to govern our lives changes daily. We get a little security complacent and an event will come along that affects us or an acquaintance and we reevaluate our modus operandi, making adjustments until we feel secure. Security is also based on confidence and appropriate defensive measures.

As for the US, in order to discuss anything about "current events" we more or less have to be political because this administration has so profoundly effected the lives of every American. We are trading liberty for false security at an alarming rate, in my opinion. Very soon, most everything we do in the USA will be monitored by the ever-present video eye. All movements will be easily tracked by the cell phone we carry, the car we drive and even the ID we carry. When we get pulled over for speeding, the officer will just wand the car and that bastid will dime us off for the speed we have traveled and our whereabouts for whatever time frame is requested.

Constant surveillance and monitoring will be an easy sell: No more lost K*ds! Crimes will be rare and easily solved since GPS will track our movements and let the nice officer know exactly who was on the scene when. Conformity will be assured.

After all, what is liberty but the opportunity to do something wrong? Hey, if you haven't done anything wrong, you have nothing to fear!*

*I understand that this is exactly what the Nazis told the Jews, but hey, no worries.

By the way, I don't believe that this is a partisan issue. I think that the corporations that hold the real power in the US have a vested interest in this scenario because it allows them to retain power regardless of the blue or red proclivity of the White House occupant.

As a 2 year resident, I can definitely identify with this thread.

During my first year, I will admit I was a bit paranoid. This wasn't helped by my family constantly calling me to see if I was still alive and to tell me horror stories about latin american (rumors, not reality). The barb wire and bars started to get on my nerves.

The second year, I decided to shake all that fear. I walked around my neighborhood and realize that THERE ARE A LOT MORE PEOPLE, WITH A LOT MORE MONEY THAN ME living here. Both gringos, ticos and other foreigners. In othewords, I'm not that big of a target at all in Escazu.

Outside of my hood, I feel I'm more of a target, but now have a more rational reaction. How dangerous is it to drive my car down the autopista??? Well, barring accidents, its not dangerous at all. What about walking around during daylight??? There are places that I simply won't go. You won't find me walking around Desamparodos or dangerous areas in downtown SJ. However, in most areas I feel completely safe. I feel that my neighborhood is SAFER than my old neighborhood in Chicago. I don't think there was single murder reported in 2008. Chicago normally has about 600 murders per year.

There are a couple of exceptions to the rule... the Domincan area, Avenida 10 and the areas next to the central market where all the druggies hang out. I stay away. I recommend all others stay away. I witness a crack head jump on my taxi and try to kick my windshield in driving down Avenida 10. The taxi driver went into his glove box and screamed I have a pistol and the guy jumped off. That certainly was an adventure.

In short, safety and paranoia in CR can only be resolved with good common sense and rational behavior.

Great topic Pro!

I tend to not worry about as much about my surroundings no matter how nefarious they may be. Speaking of CR, I always want a good time and no trouble. But I have found myself hoping some dumb ass tico would roll up to me trying to start something. I'm not the toughest guy in the world but just give him a little something to report back to his hood that it isn't wise to rob all Americans...

and the dick nor the tongue has fallen off! Mugged once (my fault), 1 case of gonorrea(my fault), and a case of Girardia( dont drink the water, or eat the salad!). Having done over 450 chicas, lots of em sin condom, I believe that there is a lot of unwarranted fear out there, but just pick up your local paper, hell, you'd think the sky was falling......In the end be smart, be safe, and try not to let fear rule your world, or It will paralyze ya!

Bda_Al,

According to the vast majoriy of medical experts you are very unlikely to get a STD thru oral sex. That said I know it is a possibility thou probably remote. AND I have been eating pu*sy for 50 years (love it) and have never gotten anything. In fact in 50 years of plucking every chica I could and every chance I got, I have only had one case of STD and that was more of a case of being stupid on my part with a chica that I knew might have something--sure enough she did, but she was so hot I took the chance. 3 pinicillen shots later no problem.

Like I said, I will NOT LIVE MY LIFE IN FEAR! but at the same time I try to not do really stupid things. Yes, some will say eating pu*sy is really stupid, but if so, after 50 years I am not going to stop now.

Personally, I'd think running over the President of Nicaragua is a LOT more dangerous than eating pu*sy

Man I have to agree with you 100%--I was scared shitless. Had to have taken 10 years off my life, and I am sure eating pu*sy has not done that.
