Whenever I am with another guy I usually walk it. I also walk right down the middle of the road as the other poster said. It is hard for someone to jump you if you are walking in the middle of the street.

If I am by myself I take cabs.

Walking down the street with a prostitute is just as offensive and obnoxious in San Jose Costa Rica as it is in San Jose California.
The locals participate but are VERY discrete . Thats why the Eden Hotel is so popular. Many of the locals still do not like it open in public and will not be sympathetic if you are robbed while walking with a girl dressed as such. . I think taxis are a good idea not just for safety but for consideration and discretion . IMO, anyone that walks down the street with a girl in prostitute clothes is asking for it.

Bah, if they don't want to see the visual aspects of prostitution then they shouldn't be anywhere near the Del Rey/BM or any massage parlor for that matter. :o

WOW ! What a comment. Are you aware that the Del Rey is one building in a big city . Three blocks away is a huge, very historic Church and the Key Largo shares a street with a school. The streets that pass our favorite places are main arteries . I guess by your logic they can all go somewhere else so a few Gringos can bang their nieces. A few Gringos can control the street and the rest of the families and older folks can refrain from using the streets that have an MP or a hotel that allows chicas. This is the lack of respect that creates ill will and is the reason why some MPs have been closed while other discreet ones have been at the same place for years. Why do you think they don't have big signs, many have no sign at all. Oh yeah, no more families can go to the Zoo because they will pass ZB on the way home and they should avoid "our" streets.

First off, I realize that prostitution isn't something you often want to flaunt. That being said, I don't think it's something you should hide in a dark corner either. We go on vacation to have fun and relax and not act like we're hiding this girl from a wife or girlfriend. That's part of the whole reason for coming here!

And you're assuming all girls there look like skanky sluts. Some of them dress decently and don't look like they're working the gringos. I want to know why it would be oh so horrible to take them walking. If we're not necking and being obscene around each other, we could look like just another couple. Which is why I asked KC why he thought we should never walk with chicas.

I'm sorry you couldn't see the sarcasm, but I wasn't being serious about the MP's. But most everyone who lives there is aware of what the Del Rey/BM is and what it offers. If not, then they must live under a fancy rock.

Well if we gringos are so horrible and they don't want us to help their families by providing work for their daughters, then the legislature can ban prostitution. But then you might have to move back home for lack of fun. :!:

Rule #1: Never walk with a Chica.

Why is that? Does it make you more of a target because they see you have the money to pay a woman? Or are the women just slow walkers in those heels and thus they make you more of a sitting duck?

All of the above. Mainly you stand out and yes it is a signal that you might be carrying cash. Chicas don't like it either, they may have cash. It is just not a good idea in my opinion.

San Jose taxi drivers drive like mad men. Many of the cars are not safe. That is such a short distance, I doubt much could happen.

There are risks in everything you do in life.

I also agree that it is not really cool to fluent it. It goes on, everyone knows it goes on, but it is respectful to be discrete when possible.

Part of the reason that walking with a chica is not a good idea is that it "anchors" you. Few are willing to beat feet and leave the chica standing there. The bad guys know it. You are a stationary target when walking a girl, IMHO.

Right but more importantly it makes you stand out as a gringo and easier to harass I believe. I would think it slows you down, you have to be concerned with her safety if something comes up, and it might cause you to be considered a guy likely with cash and valuables on him- otherwise why would the chica be with you?( )

Like many things, I am not proud of this, but I have done some walking at night, intoxicated, with my wingman the bearded clam around the Gulch. I have never planned to do this in advance but we have not had any problems when doing so. My next trip I plan to take a taxi everywhere after dark just to be safe, as I am bringing a newbie wingman and I see no reason to take the risk.
But I would not walk around the gulch, day or night, with a chica. Of course, I have never asked my date to cross the Grand Concourse with me after a Yankees game, while I have done so many times with my buddies. Nor have I gone into the Orange Bowl bar with a date, while I used to drink there in the late '90's after UM games.
Of course, YMMV, but please be safe.

Thanks for all the responses.

I know firsthand how crazy the taxi drivers are. On one occasion our driver didn't look well enough ahead and came within inches of hitting two walkers. The cars aren't always the safest, and some of the drivers probably don't even have a driver's license (or didn't pass their tests).

As to walking with the women, that sounds like a good plan. Even if it's just to the Presidente from the DR, it's a very long walk when considering her safety too. On my first trip, we always took taxis when we had girls with us. But it was also raining all the time, so we were kind of forced to. :?

I guess this just applies to walking the streets? I know some of you take your ladies shopping. I was thinking of checking out the San Pedro Mall and taking a favorita with me, if I feel generous.

And the thing everyone has forgotten in regard to this topic - if you're taking a girl back to the Presidente, she has to be dressed conservatively in order to get into the place. She's not going to look like she just fell off a hooker truck. :)

Come on man get real. A church 3 blocks away...a school across the street from the KL.

3 blocks is as good as 30 blocks since no one going to church at Soledad is wandering past the HDR. Hell man the last location of Arte y Sauna was about 25 meters from that church. The school and the KL have open and closing times far different from each other.

You have drifted from the point or missed it.
This was in response in someone saying that ticos should avoid the streets that have an MP, or the streets that the DR is on if they don't like seeing 6O year old tall Gringos walking the street with a 20 year old tica with high heals and a mini shirt.

I simply illistrated that the DR is not the only thing on this street . But ID, if you want to walk the streets with Putas on Sunday instead of using a Taxi, more power to you.

Never thought of that....was negotiating one time with a cien-range chica and she kept asking if we would take a taxi....probably b/c she had more money in her wallet than I did

Having to take a taxi for that short distance (it's like three blocks) is one of the reasons why I don't go to Costa Rica anymore. IMHO, a country that doesn't protect those who bring in the money is not worth visiting. I'm not that pu*sy starved!

#1 I am not sure that the sort of business that we bring to Costa Rica is the type of business that they want to promote.

#2 I am not sure is fair to make a judgment about an entire country based on what happens in someone seedy part of its capitol city.

Do we want to fight or f-ck ? A little respect can go a long way. I wouldn't walk my prostitute down the street in Atl and I wont do it in Sjo. For my safety as well. If she wants to go out to the mall or a non monger place I always ask them to wear something conservative. They have always agreed.

I wouldn't walk down the streets of downtown ATL at night, either with or without a chica. :D Maybe with N2Techno and his posse of MMA enthusiasts....but the potential civil and criminal liability that could attach makes a taxi a better option.
