LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Britney Spears' 16-year-old sister, who stars as a schoolgirl in Nickelodeon's popular TV show "Zoey 101," is pregnant.

The cable channel confirmed a report in the forthcoming edition of celebrity gossip magazine OK! that Jamie Lynn Spears is expecting a Ch*ld.

"We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation. We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being," Nickelodeon said in a statement e-mailed to Reuters.

A high school student who lives in Louisiana, Jamie Lynn Spears reportedly met the father, Casey Aldridge, the son of a Tennessee papermill worker, at church. Jamie Lynn Spears' personal publicist was not available for comment.

Her big sister, Britney Spears, may not be the best source of parenting advice. The 26-year-old pop star lost primary custody of her two sons, aged 2 and 1, to ex-husband Kevin Federline after their divorce last year and is engaged in a bitter custody battle that has shone a harsh spotlight on her maternal shortcomings.

"Zoey 101," which wrapped production on its fourth and final season in September, revolves around a headstrong student at a co-ed boarding school in California. Fresh episodes will air through 2008, a spokeswoman for the Viacom Inc-owned network said.

Nobody is putting the girls we find in our travels above this girl. But when you have a family structure and thrust yourself into the vortex of public opinion then get pregnant at 16- or worse, let your daughter become pregnant knowing your other more famous daughter's life is a mess- people will talk and have every right to without being called hypocrites.

I just saw on Fox News Channel tonight that Mama Spears already sold the rights to the first baby pics for a hefty $1million... how's that for financial opportunism!

Spears' lover faces rape charges

The boyfriend of 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears could face statutory rape charges carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.

If 19-year-old Casey Aldridge really is the father and the baby was conceived in Spears' home state of Louisiana, the act could technically be considered "felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile" - defined as "sexual intercourse with consent between someone age 19 or older and someone between age 12 and 17".

Fox News reports that in Louisiana a person can only legally consent to sex at age 17. If aged 15 or 16, the other person involved must be no more than two years older for the act to be considered legal.

Yet Aldridge wouldn’t fare much better if the act happened in California, where Spears lives while on the set of her TV show Zoey 101.

"It states clearly in the Californian Penal Code that any person who engages in an act of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor (under 18 ) who is not more than three years older or three years younger than the perpetrator, is guilty of a misdemeanour and faces up to one year in a county jail," criminal defence attorney Jim Hammer said.

“But if Aldridge is actually more than three years older he could be up for a felony, which carries a maximum three years in prison.”

But lawyer Christopher Darden says charges are unlikely.

“The father of the Ch*ld may have committed a criminal offence or misdemeanour by having unlawful sex with a minor,” he said. “But unless the complaint is filed from the minor’s parent, it is unlikely that this will be taken further.”

The furore comes amid a tough day for the Spears family. Jamie Lynn's pop star sister Britney reckons her ex-husband Kevin Federline has been smoking pot in front of their K*ds - and is determined to get them drug-tested to prove it.

All the problems have also come at a cost for family matriarch Lynne, whose book on parenting has been shelved indefinitely. Is all this mess her fault? Many social commentators believe so.

I only took one semester of criminal justice but I remember that (statutory) rape is a strict liability offense, so the perpetrator is supposed to be prosecuted, no matter what the intent or circumstances are. I guess there must be a celebrity clause that I wasn't aware of.

I guess no matter how rich or famous they get you just can change that trailer park hill-billy culture.

Why shouldn't Jamie Lynn go to jail? She made the decision to open her legs. These laws need to be re-evaluated in the light of current American morality and culture. You should see these high school girls now. They aren't docile virgins easily duped into giving up the nappy dugout. THEY are the aggresors. They call the shots. They are in control. The boys wait around for the GIRLS to make all the calls and all the plans. Nowadays, girls RULE and boys DROOL.
