I thought I heard or read somewhere that some Visa or Mastercard Platinum cards provide auto insurance while overseas so that I don't need to buy the CDW insurance which can add up to $20 per day to a car rental. Anyone know if that's accurate or not? Thx.

I do not know the answer to your question, but I always pay for the full insurance in CR when renting a car. To me, it is well woorth the peace of mind.

Some cards do, some cards don't. It's best to call them directly to make certain.

I don't know about Visa. I know MasterCard does cover CDW, they are processing my claim for the accident I had in October. Call your card company to make sure. You will still need to pay for the SLI (mandatory, unless you can show on paper that your auto insurance covers you in CR).

FYI-In order for MC to cover you, you have to reserve and pay for the rental using that MC and also decline the rental company's CDW insurance. If you accept the CDW from the rental company, MC will NOT cover you.
