Doesn't that depend on the limits set by your bank? I think my bank set a limit of $300.00 per ATM withdrawal and I had no problem getting that from the ATM in CR. Keep in mind, it is dispensed in colones.

It also depends on the machine itself. My bank, Cuscatlan, let's me take 100k colones, $200, per pop. However, you can repeat the process up to your limit at your bank at home. Other banks may have different rules, different limits.

Many banks in San Jose, BAC San Jose, Interfin, Scotia, etc, will dispense either colones or dollars. You make the choice.

Interfin has a $400.00 limit per transaction. You may make multiple transactions up to the daily limit set by your bank.

Has been said here before but worth repeating for newbies make sure you advise your ATM card issuing bank and your credit card banks that you will be making withdrawals in Costa Rica from xx date to xx date. Some banks will freeze your account after the first withdrawal if they have not been notified in advance that it will be used outside the USA.

Isn't there an ATM in the HDR that dispenses US Dollars?

Good advice ID on contacting your bank each trip. I had requested my bank keep my card set for international withdraws but had a problem last trip. Seems for some reason my home bank set my card back to prohibit international withdraws and I had to call my bank to get it corrected from CR.rbc100

My experience has been that at the Colonial I had a max per transaction of 100K colones. My bank limit is $2000/day. Last time down I made 2 transactions at the same machine in a span of about 2 minutes. 100K each time. No problem.

I think the ATM at the HDR gives you a receipt to take to the casino cashier. You can request dollars or colones. Of course, check the exchange rate for BUYING dollars if you want dollars. The HDR, IMHO, is very competitive on exchange rate. That has been my experience. I have never received dollars anywhere that I have used my ATM card. My ATM card is my primary source of dinero when in CR.

Many thanks gents for your advice. I just got back from thew PI and most machines there only let you withdraw 5000 pesos or $100 per pop. Good to know you can withdraw more in San Jose especially since its $5 per withdrawal...

Before I depart for CR I tell my bank that where I will be using my Credit Card and I tell them the limit I want imposed on withdrawals.
Commerce Bank is very efficient and accomodating.

My bank does not charge ma and pays me back charges from other banks for the use of their ATM's. Plus if I use my Check card as a credit card I get 1.5 ercent back.

I Love my bank.

This is excellent advice. Curiously, I recently learned that if your bank has a daily withdrawal limit of say $800, you CANNOT reduce that amount. I was interested in reducing my liability in the event that my card should be stolen. I was told that I could not reduce or increase the limitations. That may apply only to my own banking system, but I was also told that applied to all MASTERCARD affiliated cards.

The 2 ATM's in DR will give 100K colones per transaction. You have to give the receipt to the cashier at the Morazan.

The last time I used the ATM at the HDR they had taken out the machine located to the left of the check in desk that use to dispense a voucher to take to the cashier. The only ATM machine I saw was the one on the right (as you face the desk) and it issued cash not a voucher.

Have to admit it has been awhile since I pulled out money at the HDR. However, my info on the Colonial is less than 2 weeks old.
