Post subject:  Bullfights

One of the more interesting New Years doings in CR are the "bullfights" here where the bull enters the ring and chases lots of foolish men who run away on foot to the safety of the fence. There are maybe fifty men in the ring when the bull enters and each tries to entice the bull to chase him and then runs away.

Of course the bulls are not hurt except for their pride of not catching a human (most of the time).

These events are televised and the locals get a kick out of watching them, as did I.

Does anyone know when or where they have bullfighting? That's something I would like to see, but I have no idea where or when they do these. Are they a weekly thing or monthly ? Where are they held?

Holiday festival in Zapote runs from about the 15th not the exact start date till just after new Years. IT IS A must for anyone who has never been there.

Bull fights are daily one show in the afternoon beginning around 330 NEVER ON TIME... and at night around 9PM.... they have a little parade horses the bull fighters, some music then they put on their show.. no bulls are harmed.. best part is about 200 plus Ticos get in the ring and torment the bulls.. I personally saw 3 ticos get goored inside of 2 hours last year took them all out on strechers... it was a site to see... they also have multible out door open air carnival type food, local and festival like. Rides, attractions and it is amazing to see the local peope in their own Holiday mode...

A MUST SEE.. bull fight fees to enter are about 8 bucks each if I remember could be more.... All seats are fine so no need to get in early and wait for them to start as they are always late.
HAVE FUN!

I was just watching on the news last week that there will be no bull rings this year because of injury and such... I was extremely disappointed to hear it. If anyone has info either way, I'm all ears.

I asked the chica at the HDR tour desk the other day and she said said the government did the same thing last year, it was up in the air until the last minute because of controversy over people and the animals getting hurt. She said they wouldn't know until Dec. 20 if the bullfights were on. I went last year and it was something to see, we saw several Ticos carried out on a stretcher. I believe they started on Dec 26 and were every day at 3 and 9 PM, hopefully they'll keep the tradition. Even if not the fiesta at Zapote is still worth a visit.

I took video of all that I could last year. I have quite a bit of the bulls jumping over the walls after people, including one shot of the bull's horns skewering a guy through the hand. Definitely a good show.

I was there last year. In addition to several TICOS (men) gored by the bulls.....there were several TICAS (women) gored. They then went through the stands to solicit donations. I viewed the bloody pants legs up close. Quite a show! If you have never been, it's a "must see". I remember the first time I attended the fair at Zapote (years ago) and was very impressed by the fireworks shooting into the crowds. I remember holding up my leather jacket to shield my chica from being burned. Only in Costa Rica! :D
