I was certainly rooting for CR to qualify, and now that they've achieved that, I hope they do well. I will be rooting for them in every game. But...if by some slim chance, they played the US, who would you root for? I have to admit, I'd root for the US, although if CR won I wouldn't feel too bad about it.

Think I would root for Costa Rica. Not because I live here but because I think a world cup would have a lot of meaning and inspire a lot of pride for the Ticos. In the US I think about 90% of the population would not even notice a US victory.

I disagree with Ding Dong...look at what winning the world cup did for Women's Soccer in the USA. I think if the men won (or did really well) soccer may finally catch on in the US.

It has caught on here in Panama (after Panama making it to the finals of the Gold Cup). You should have seen when the team returned home, it was as if they won the World Cup. Panama is primarily a Baseball, Basketball, Boxing country (cause of the US influence), but Futball is now becoming the national sport.

I could not get any USA tickets so I went ahead and purchased a TST4 set to follow CR! hee hee. Hopefully they will be in a fun to watch bracket.

With due respect I disagree.The US hosted the World Cup in 1994 and even after staging the biggest sporting event in the world (Yes even bigger than the Olympics) it still did nothing for the game in the US in terms of mass appeal.It just seems that for some reason North Americans just dont "get" the game like the rest of the world.I know more and more K*ds are playing the game but it still ranks way way behind NFL,baseball, basketball,NASCAR even hockey in fan appeal and loyalty.

If the US did manage to win (Not going to happen) or even reach the semi final stages I would be willing to wager that within 3 weeks 90% of the population wouldnt be able to name more than 2-3 players on the team.Football (OK soccer) just doesn't dent the consciousness of the US professional sporting fan.

I agree with you. I am an american soccer fan (everywhere else is futbol) and can atest to your statement. Soccer will never be a sport in USA like in th rest of the world.

3. soccer is a cault for the world not just a sport, just like football is here in the states, will take us forever to for this to grow as cult for us

I too am an avid futbal fan. I played in college and I have one son who plays now in college. Underpar10 hit it. No timeouts hurts marketing. I would add low scoring does not help.

I do get a kick out of some guys ignorance thinking the only sports an athlete can get paid big money are american. If K*ds would ever become educated on the kind of money that could be made more would play. My son graduates this year and is contemplating going to europe or Brazil to play for cash. I am hoping for Brazil but the cash is in Europe. It would be very convenient to go visit my son in Brazil 10 or 12 times a year.

Well...1st I will root for Brasil as that's my 2nd home...then I would root for Costa Rica. As far as the US and soccer "catching on" in the US...that will NEVER....I repeat...NEVER happen. Even if the US won the World Cup the enthusiasm might last 30 days. In the US there is simply WAY TOO MUCH competition from other sports (baseball..football...basketball..tennis..and on and on..) which other countries simply don't have to deal with. As far as women's soccer....well for some reason I still can't take that seriously. I'll watch that if they have cute "bundinhas".

How do you define "catch on" in the US? While I think it will take much more time for the MLS to solidify as a legit league, at a community level soccer is very strong in the States and the quality of play has definitely improved.
