Other than Tabacon Resort (they are sold out this weekend)...does anyone know of any nice romantic places up near the volcano? |

Papi, Here's a link to a hotel that's suppose to have a view of the volcano from each room: http://www.tacotal.com/ I have not stayed at that hotel yet, but plan to the first week in November. The rate for a standard room is $60 per night. From what I understand, the place just went through a major renovation, so things should be pretty new. The person I have been dealing with at the hotel is Grettel...now wouldn't that be interesting if she's the same Grettel from G&G... ![]() ShyOne |

I stayed at the Volcano Lodge. It has real nice rooms very private. The back door went to a small patio with rocking chairs and a great view of the Volcano. It had a pool and hot tub. It is mainly a non mongering hotel so most times the pool area was empty. It has a great restaurant. It was in the $70 dollar range, but you need to pay for the Tabacon entry. |

The problem you will have is the rain and cloud. I was in Arenal for three days and there wasn't one clear night to see the volcano. |

There are some decent cabinas on the road from La Fortuna to the volcano. Not too expensive and a good view of the volcano. Drawing a blank on the name (Vista Del Fuego?). |

Dragon, Was it Montaña de Fuego? $115/nt + tax for the deluxe cabins ($95 for the std cabin w/dbl beds). Or was it Fuego Arenal? $40/nt + tax for basic cabins w/dbl beds. The latter doesn't sound like the "romantic" place Papi is looking for since they describe themselves as "An affordable family Hotel with great views of the Arenal Volcano lava flow from your porch." But, damn, for that price in that area, that sounds like a great affordable alternative if any one is up there just on their own. BTW, both of those places are very close to the Tacotel on the other side of the road. |

It's a bit late for the original poster but this site seems to have a lot of info: http://www.arenal.net/arenal-costa-rica-map.htm I'm going for a couple of days in February. Haven't decided where to stay yet (depends on how much money I want to spend on the room). |

I think it was the latter. I sure as hell didn't pay more than $100. As long as you don't take anything too wild like say a donkey or a midget, you'll be cool. We had a little hoe down there a few years ago when some buddies came from Spring Break. I don't know if the other thermal springs are open (not Tabacon and not the public place), but it was a more relaxed environment. Not as many people, but a good place to get away with your chica for a dip in the hot water. |

Not only is that map Midnightrider provided a great one but the whole site it is part of is the best one I've seen on the Arenal area. http://www.arenal.net is on a very similar same level as http://www.monteverdeinfo.com for those of you familiar with that website. In fact, I think they were put together by the same webmaster. I've been using Arenal.net for previous trips to the Arenal area and actually booked my stay at Los Lagos through them for my last trip. I never noticed Fuego Arenal before and think I might check it out next time I go to Arenal. It certainly is nice enough for little old me if I'm there solo and even with a date it is probably nice enough. Maybe it is not as "romantic" as Tabacon, but one should remember most of these gals are not used to anything fancy anyway. For them a $50 hotel room is luxurious. I love Tabacon as much as the next guy but their prices are climbing through the roof. Another thing I've noticed for some time and really comes out when you click on any of the area hotels on that map is how much the hotel rates in that area in general have been going up. As I've said elsewhere the first place I stayed at in that area 6 years ago has gone up at least 50% in price since I stayed there. Tabacon seems to go up in price every few months. And it is hard to find a room (outside of La Fortuna itself) for much less than $100/nt. Its gotten as bad around Arenal as it has been around Manuel Antonio. Again, Fuego Arenal seems to be the sole exception for hotels outside of La Fortuna. Finally, the last thing I noticed from looking at the latest map are all the other new things to see and do in that area that were not on that map at the beginning of the year: SkyTrek/SkyTram, Hanging Bridges, Paraiso Canopy Tour and PureTrek Canyoning. I'd love to hear reports from anyone that has been on any of those, particularly on the canyoning one, something I've been interested in for a long time. |
