Dam dude, I just got back from 10 days at SL. I did the class 1 & 2 rapids one week and the class 3 & 4 on my last day. Totally awesome is all I have to say!! We almost flipped a couple of times on the 3 & 4 rapids. I was paddlin in the front and on a number of occasions the agua was 5 feet above my head. All I could say was "Oh shit" and hold on. My reccomendation is you get in a boat with strong paddlers in the 3 & 4 rapids or you will be in for some maneuvering problems. My raft had all strong gringoes. Big boulders are out there that you have to muscle to get away from or you will get sucked into the undertow. Our outfitter had 3 safety guys in canoes that were ready to pluck out swimmers. We got to free swim 2 rapids and float on our ass, through a canyon that was way cool!! Make sure to bring sandals or water shoes and plenty of sunscreen.
Each outfitter had a photogragher that selled pics at the end.

Good luck, Toadtamer

I was on the Sarapiqui river for class I & II rapids and the Pacuare river for class III & IV rapids. My first time there so I can't compare the water level. The Pacuare river is where they hold the world championship yac races. That's a mean river. If you aren't phisically fit, you can do major damage to yourself. Some dropoffs go into holes 10 feet down, if your team doesn't paddle to get out, you get sucked in and stay there swammped. My tip is to buddy up with 5 other experienced paddlers.
Chances are very good of capsizing if your team can't follow the guides commands. The owner of the Sportmans Lodge, Bill, took a spill on the P.
He told me he broke 3 ribs and racked his back.

GOOD LUCK!!

Post subject:  I just got back today from the Pacuare river run. Awesome

I just got back from the Pacuare .

I too was upfront paddling all day. It was great, awesome.

There are other runs if anyone still wants to go in a couple of days or next week.
The river guide let us jump in the water to cool off one of the guys in my raft jump up in front of the raft and hit his shin on a rock under water he did not see and broke it.
So becareful when jumping in.

Just let me know.
