Does anyone have any knowledge of a river cruise at sunset?

I remember seeing something about one in the Jaco area, but never heard anything more about

I know that JD's Watersports (among others) have 3 hour sunset cruises out around Herradura Bay and out into the Gulf. They also have day time cruises up the Guacalillo Estuary and the Tarcoles River to see the mangroves and crocodiles etc. I don't THINK they have the sunset river cruise or at least it wouldn't make as much sense since the view of the setting sun through the tree line wouldn't be as nice as it would be out on the bay, but I could be wrong. Maybe you're getting those 2 different tours confused.

I can't speak from experience, but i know i would not want to be in the jungle after dark. Mosquito factor.

An evening or sunset cruise on the ocean would be more palatable if you ask me.

Your link was bad. I think this is what you meant http://www.ecoscapetours.com/web_files/sunset.html. That actually sounds like it could be a very interesting tour that I had never heard of before. This is one of the outfits whose main offering is an All-in-1 tour (and happen's to be the one I went on). This tour is a variation of that that might appeal more to some of the guys around here since it allows you to sleep late (or go for a morning MP session). It leaves SJ between 1-2PM and arrives back around 9:30PM (the downside but still not too late for squeezing in some evening entertainment). It includes a drive through Braulio Carillo Park, a Sarapiqui River boat trip, a guided nature walk at sunset and dinner at a riverside jungle lodge.

A night cruise on the Rio Tarcoles near Jaco might be somewhat mosquito infested, but I'd be more concerned about being out in a small boat at night surrounded by a bunch of crocodiles. Mosquitos can be a problem in other areas too, but a good repellant can work wonders for that (see my recent thread http://www.costaricaticas.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=58056. There are actually a few places in CR where one can go on a night jungle tour. Monteverde is another place that comes to mind. There is a surprising amount to see and hear as many creatures only come out after dark.

Prolijo...that indeed sounds like the '4-in-1' tour, with a later start time and the nature walk at sunset. I'd like to add a caveat pertaining to most tours.
Never plan on arriving back at your hotel in SJO on time. If they say the return time is 9:30, as Prolijo pointed out, you probably should plan on between 10:00 and 10:30. They're usually between 30 minutes to an hour late, depending on the traffic and what hotel you're staying at. Most tour companies pick up the clients at their hotels in the morning and drop them off at night. As some tour participants may be staying at a hotel on the outskirts of SJO, such as Escazu, they may drop them off first.

Are they still advertising breakfast at a 'mansion'/upscale country inn
on the '4-in-1' tour? When I took that tour, we stopped at a 'dumpy'
little restaurant on the left-hand side of the road. It sure wasn't how they described it in the brochure. I don't think it was even open. We had to wait while they opened for business. I did enjoy the rest of the tour though, even though we couldn't see the Poas volcano as the visibilty was only about 10 feet!

It sounds like a similar basic set-up in that Braulio Carillo and Rio Sarapiqui are included. The original 4-in-1 tours usually offer a visit to a coffee farm (where ecoscapes version schedules its breakfast), a visit to Poas Volcano and La Paz Waterfall park which this one does not. OTOH, this one offers the 45 minute guided jungle night tour and dinner at the Selva Verde Jungle Lodge. I don't know but suspect anyone staying downtown has a good chance of being picked up late and dropped off earlier since unlike the 4-in-1 tour this one does not go out through Heredia to Poas and beyond but both comes and goes through BC Park and the Guapiles Hwy that feeds almost directly into downtown.
