Coming back to Costa Rica in June and had a question. I will be in Arenal for several days and then on to Tamarindo. I have been to Tamarindo so I know what to expect from the chicas there but have never been to Arenal. Will be with family most of the time so I can't bring anyone from San Jose with me but was wondering if anyone knew of somewhere I could sneak off to for a little fun with some chicas? Staying at a nice resort...does anyone know if people ever have luck with staff from a resort (housekeeping or spa staff?) or maybe know of a specific bar to check out. Any help is appreciated.

SOMETIMES you can score with locals...especially if you have some Spanish language skills. Usually though in these small town areas they will be very careful about being seen with you...extended family and eyes are everywhere...and in their hometowns, their reputations...even if false...are important to keep up. If you do hook up, it will not be pure mongering usually. You have to "date" and maybe meet her family before she will allow much intimacy. This is just my cultural experience here and eslewhere. You best be might be another foreign tourist in the area who is there to "party"...

Thanks for the info. I do speak decent Spanish so hopefully I can find a local that wants to have some fun. I like the idea of other tourists too, all this time I have been thinking tica tica tica but I guess a gringa (US or european) tourist would work too. And to clarify, I will be there with family (parents, brothers and sisters) not with a significant other so I don't have to worry about a game of 20 questions if I sneak off for an evening. CAN'T WAIT TO GET BACK DOWN TO CR...PURA VIDA!

Has ANYONE here EVER scored with a chica they hadn't brought with them or even a fellow tourist in the Arenal/Tabacon/La Fortuna area? I'm guessing this is an extremely low probability (near impossibility) plan of action. Personally I think your best bet may be to just enjoy the area's natural attractions an the time you get to spend with your family and wait until you get back to SJ to get your jollies.

I'm guessing you're probably going to be staying at one of the more expensive lodges outside of town that are closer to the volcano. If you stay there, unless you think you can score with the front desk clerk, your maid, waitress or masseuse, the only chicas you're likely to see are either going to be with their families or with their Gringo boyfriends. Similarly the foreign tourists at such places are much more likely to be family groups or couples than they are to be young single girls on the make. If you're looking for that type of female tourist, you're much more likely to find them at other types of places, such as at beach towns or even youth-oriented budget hotels or hostels such as in La Fortuna itself. When it comes to the fancy resorts, the female hotel staff may be your best bet, but I definitely wouldn't bet the farm on it.

This means that you're probably going to want to get away from the hotel (and your family) to do the hunting. I think the best bet is Nuck's idea about asking your cabby about local haunts with P4P or local ladies that are open to earning some extra bucks. Here are some other thoughts. La Fortuna does not strike me as a place where you're likely to pick up a local off the street and romance or bribe her into your bed in the 1-2 days that you have to spend there. They see plenty of tourists in La Fortuna and know you're just passing through. Romance isn't going to do it and unless you know where to go and what to look for are unlikely to distinguish the pro or semi-pro. Similarly, I don't think hitting on a female tourist at the local lunch counter is going to cut it either. You'll need to know where the local "party" places are.

La Fortuna is not a town with much in the way of nightlife, though that may have changed with all the relatively recent growth in the tourism market. The only place I have heard of is Volcan Look and is purported to be the largest disco in CR outside of SJ. Its about 5km west of town. It supposedly hops with all the locals on the weekends but is supposed to be pretty dead during the rest of the week.

My first trip to San Jose I met a very sweet unhardened Coumbiana at the Del Rey and picked her up for an hour or so,wish I had gotten her for the night looking back.She wasn't a regular there and have never seen her since.Anyway she said she usually worked in the Arenal area and she certainly wasn't the typical Del Rey Coumbiana.She was quite attractive and nicely dressed a bit older like early 30's,also a very good provider.That leads me to believe there are possibly some working girls up there among the mix.Wish I had asked where she usually worked.rbc100

I was in Arenal in January. I talked to a clerk at one of the spas. He said there were some chicas that hang out at the bar. I didn't have time to check to see whether it was true of not. I'm talkin about the big tourist hot spring place. Don't remember the name. I checked out the disco outside of town. Mostly high school students. Don't even try. You stand out. The taxi driver said that the closest chica place was in a city 20 miles away from fortuna. Don't remember the city name though.

I believe you mean Tabacon. Love that place. The bar is a grass hut-type in the back, just before the big sign that says basically "don't go any further - that's a frickin Volcano!" I didn't score there, but if I had any language skills I would have gotten that bartender for sure
