What are the laws (if any) about bringing a bottle of liquer into the country? I'm arriving next Friday and I understand I can't purchase any alcohol until Saturday. What a bummer!

It is my understanding you can't purchase liquor until Monday morning. Search the posts for Semana Santa and read this link

Liquor CAN NOT be purchased from Wednesday 23rd at night until Monday 28th early morning. The rest of the time is business as usual.

When you arrive at San Jose airport and purchase alcohol you are allowed to bring in 8 liters duty free, even though you will be unable to buy liquor at the airport if you arrive on Friday March 25, I would imagine you can bring in 8 liters from the US.

It's not as long as everybody is saying. Alcohol sales stop at midnight on Thursday and resumes at midnight on Saturday. I'm about 99.9% sure of this. That will probably make it dead in SJ but I'm sure there will be girls to play with in Jaco.

I remember sales not resuming until Monday morning so I checked with my novia who is a tica she said no alcohol until " Lunes de la mañana".

Guess will find out in about 10 days.

I just didn't want any hassle in the airport. What about beer? Can we buy beer starting on Saturday?

I was wrong on this one, here is the article as Admin1 mentions in the next post.

Alcohol sales banned
during holidays

By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

Today is the day to drink up and stock up, because alcohol sales are forbidden Thursday and Friday in Costa Rica due to the national holidays preceding Easter.

Police will be placing seals on the front door or bars. Alcohol displays in groceries will be covered in plastic and sealed off. Restaurants will have to seal refrigerators and cabinets that contain alcohol.

Several downtown bar owners were groaning Tuesday at the prospect of losing income from alcohol sales this week and from a similar prohibition on both sides of the April 7 presidential runoff election.

Admin1 or anyone with first hand knowledge,

Does this mean no alcohol sales April 6, April 7, and April 8. CR use of "both sides" may have a different meaning from mine.

According to AM Costa Rica this AM no Liquor Thursday & Friday Only.. Not to say it wont be a ghost town, but Only Thursday & Friday is the Ban on Sales, according to todays report.

Its standard Procedure in SJO not to allow sales of Alcohol on Election days run off or otherwise. I did not know there was a run off election on the 7th, so I'll have to check into that.
