Hi everyone. First post here. I hear there is a man who makes boots for about $60 a pair somewhere in San Jose. He traces your foot, lets you pick out the material and then he has the boots ready for you in a few hours. I think he's located in a seedy part of the city in a small shop. Does anyone know the name of this place or directions? Thanks in advance!

And also, where is the custom shirt maker?

Now that would be nice to come home with a pair of custom made boots. You could tell everyone you were chasing chicas so much you had to buy a new pair of shoes.

Ask a cab driver to take you to the Torre Mercedes on Paseo Colon. from the building, it's 2 blocks North. There are a bunch of places on the same street.

There are a bunch of these shops just a few blocks west of Coco-Cola. They have boots and saddles displayed outside and will make you boots or shoes at a very reasonable rate.

I have never used them but have been told, by those that have, that the quality and workmanship is first rate.

There was a posting awhile back from Teal Blue, I think, about a custom shirt maker near the Holiday Inn. Do not remember the details. He does not post anymore so may want to review his past posts if you can not find it in a search. Good Luck.

Latimman93 and Ding Dong,

I will be in SJ for my first vist the end of this month. As a day adventure I would like to experience some local craftmanship making a pair of boots for myself. Can you provide me with additional information. How long does it take, is it an area to walk around while I wait, should I take a taxi to order than taxi back to hotel to come back later via taxi to pick them up. What price range should I expect. Are all shoemakers good? Or should I look for specific shoemakers?

Thanks

I don’t believe that they can make you a pair of boots in one day.

The area is very safe, but not a lot of fun.

The quality is very much all the same, as they are all family. The stores / workshops are one next to the other, and they are very small. They don’t look like much, but quality is good, and they have a lot of samples that you can choose from or base your own design on.

You wont get a day adventure, but you will a good pair of boots.

Price range should be 15000-30000 colones ($30 - $60) a pair, depending on the style.

Anyone have an idea what time any of the bootmakers open shop. I would like to stop by early on my first full day to allow a few days to have a pair of boots made. I would hope if I stop by on Thursday morning I can pick them up Monday afternoon.

Most Ticos are early risers just look at the amount of foot traffic on Central Avenue at 6:30 A.M.

I would suspect (but do not know) that a lot of these shops will open around 8:00 A.M. and all will be open by 9:00 A.M.

Go early and if they not open yet grab some breakfast at a soda in the neighborhood. One of the locals in the soda might even give you a recommendation on which shop to try.

I have been told the prices starts about 18500 colones and goes up depending on exactly what you want. A good deal.
