Years ago, a San Jose tour company offered a 4-in-1 day trip. The tour van picked me up at 8 am, and I was back at my hotel by 6:30 pm. We saw La Paz waterfalls, La Selva Biological Station near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui and jungle boat ride on Rio Sarapqiui and a tour of Brauilio Carillo National Park. When I went 15 years ago, the tour included lunch and cost around $45 per person. Today, it is triple that price: http://www.agenciadeviajescostarica.com ... iones.html I enjoyed the tour very much, and we stayed within a 2-hour radius of San Jose.

My last two times in San Jose, I took day trips (Via Jorge) to Irazu, Cartago, Grecia and Sarchi.

Costa Rica has some of the prettiest small towns on earth (namely Grecia & Sarchi).

If you are a photographer or simply like taking pictures, you'll love Grecia & Sarchi (Ox Cart Memorial in center of Sarchi ROCKS!)

Thanks for the tip, it's sometimes good to take a rest and do some actual tourism and actually be interested in the place's history and culture after all  plus, it gives you an alibi to show other people if they get suspicious...

Expediciones tropicales is recommended by Amistad

There are numerous brochures there and at Sportsmen

Also there is a tour guide office across the street from the west side of Taormina hotel if you want to go and talk to them.

I will also agree with using Vanessa for transportation. She has picked me up over ten times and never been late, including 4:30 am in Jaco to catch an early flight.

I have also used Vanessa for a tour guide. Went up to Irazu volcano and Cartago recently. Great person to spend the day with. Much better than the random assortment you get with an organized tour which might include judgmental gringas. Exactly what we are trying to avoid in CR.

You get to set the itinerary, decide how long to stay at destinations, and don't waste an hour running around to hotels picking up other travelers. You will have to ask her what your chosen itinerary will cost, but my experience has been she is not much more expensive than the shared tours.
