Coming next month to Jaco with 3 buddies and we wanted to go deep sea fishing for a few hours. Is it best to book ahead of time or go to a concierge and book? What is the average price per person? Thank you

It all depends on what you are looking for. If you want a panga figure about 60.00 per person half day and about 100 full day. If you want a real boat something 30-34' then you will be in the 700-950 range half day and 1050-1400 full day plus tips. If you speak spanish and you want to take a chance show up at playa Herradura (Los Suenos) about 6-6:30am and see what kind of deal you can make. If you do not have a car you will need to arrange transportation and taking that into consideration you might be better off booking with a tour operator who will make sure you get there and back.

Get ahold of One Lucky Dogg and see if he still has his fishing trip out of Tarcoles. We did that once and it was an ok trip. Did not catch fish but they tried hard for a couple of hours then we went snorkeling had lunch on the beach with small lobsters and shellfish. We were going to fish the afternoon but the waves and wind picked up so we headed back to the home base. They will tailor the trip to what you want to do and it included transportation both ways.

If you really want a great deep-sea fishing experience, on the Pacific coast, contact George Beckwith and charter the Dragin Fly out of Los Suenos.

On the Caribbean coast, Jimmy at Zona II has a package with some Lodge (that I hear is pretty good) for tarpon - and there's tarpon there all year long (a guest caught 5 tarpon Friday afternoon - Saturday ranging from 100 to 175 lbs and two of their guides went fishing Saturday and caught 15 tarpon).

Take a couple of t-shrts and that Zona II package will give you a week's worth of "what I did in Costa Rica" pictures...

Or, as we used to say, "cover for action, cover for status".

September isn't really a booming month in Jaco- I'll bet you could just show up one day at Los Suenos and book for the next day- maybe even bargain a bit
