I'll be in country for about 90 days so I was hoping to get some good gym time in. Anybody have any solid recommendations? Also, know any good (safe) running routes through San Jose?

Wouldn't mind a gym partner either...

For a fairly nice gym, Fitsimmons in the Sabanna area is nice but very far from the gulch. I used to take a taxi there from the Gulch. Now if I am staying in Barrio Amon I will use the small cheap gym across from the Clinica Morazon up the hill.

there is one walking distance from the gulch i have visited. not sure of the name but someone here likely knows. anyone?
Bill has a small gym w a universal machine, dumbells and benches, couple of recumbent bikes and a treadmill at the SL.
oh and a set of perfect push ups
haven't seen an eliptical anywhere in SJ though i'm sure they exist.

I'm actually curious to know if there are any crossfit gyms in or around San Jose.

There is a gym on the corner of Ave 7 and Calle 3, just up the hill from HLH.

I don't do gyms, so I don't know much about it. But you can look into it for yourself. It must be the same one as Zunbake mentions, above.

There used to be a gym on the top floor of the San Pedro mall, it's been years since I worked out there and they used to have daily and weekly rates, it was modern, air conditioned, had tons of equipment, etc. I assume it's still there, it was popular, easy taxi ride from downtown. Here's also a list of choices :

I'm a gym rat but when I visit CR I get my 2 hours or more a day exercise from pounding, your hips glutes, abs and back get a real workout and many of the ladies will allow different positions so you can try all types of different moves to work out your biceps and triceps, especially with little spinners you can lift... It's also fun to walk around the main avenida for an hour or more and check out all the shops and senoritas walking around... 8)

Great replies! I'm staying near the San Pedro mall so I'll check out the top floor.

I've used it 2 or 3 trips - its like $13 for a week - I use the treadmill only for 50 min's +/- so I can't attest to the quality of the weights or other equipment, however frequently see guys using them.

The owner is a female CR Dr.; very nice, friendly and the cost is reasonable - no idea what a monthly or 3 month membership would cost - I recommend this place, especially since its w/in walking distance of many hotels.

had to search for this thread but i found the best gym i have seen in SJ at the radission. its a golds gym and is like a 10 minute walk from SL.
lots of free weight and lifefitness/precor equipment. treadmills and a full row of ellipticals. including lifefitness 9500 style and precor 534i and more recent. never seen these machines at any gym in SJ although i am sure they probably exist. great outdoor pool, stretching room w all the stuff we look for.
this is now my go to gym.
could easily be the place the last couple of posters have been talking about.

There are a number of world gyms around San Jose. I work out in the one in Escazu. Nicest gym I have been a member of.

The gym up the hill from the HLH has adequate free weights and machines but not up to US standards. It does the job for me but is not air-conditioned so I really sweat like a pig, which is appropriate because I am, in fact, somewhat of a pig in many ways.
