Changes to tax code in CR! Former $50 per month per table game (poker cash or tourney table, BJ, rummy, roulette, etc.) is now raised to $500!

Good luck to the new reopened casino at Mona Lisa. And I hope the Del Rey owners choke on the increase!

I suspect a move of many poker games to "underground" locals.

When the new tax was passed many months ago there were dire predictions, on this board, about layoffs in casinos, sports books fleeing to friendlier countries and other various predictions of doom and gloom.

Yet it appears casinos are still up and running, sports books are still here and things seem to be no different then before the new tax was passed.

Info as I understand it........ The overblown taxes have not taken effect as 0f now. The owners have hired Lawyers to fight it. Poker games at the Horseshoe,Del Rey,Mona Lisa and the Paradiso are all going strong while the Lawyers fight with the Powers that be.

In an article in today's Sun Sentinel (FL) there was a line describing how much para mutual operators are taxed.

Quote:
Gambling and gaming is illegal in Florida unless it's legal," Senate Gambling Chair Garrett Richter said. "Internet cafes are illegal."

Pari-mutuel representatives complain that while their venues have to pay a $2 million annual licensing fee and a 35 percent tax on slot revenues, in addition to disclosing how much their machines pay out, the strip-mall operations do not.

The point is that gambling is a prime target for "sin taxes" and Costa Rica is not reinventing the wheel they are simply installing an up to date version. Casinos and sports books have gotten not exactly a free ride all these years in Costa Rica but certainly a very heavily discounted one. Even with the new tax they still are basically unregulated and can pretty much make the payout what they want.
