Post subject:  sailfish/marlin taxidermy???

ok I may be getting ahead of myself...but heading to jaco next month...was down in costa rica fishing last year, but it was windy as hell all week, the captains said going too far offshore wouldn't be worth it as it was gusting to 40-45 all freaking week. We stayed near the shore but still had fun.
Hoping next month for good weather and going offshore for sailfish.
If we can land one, does anyone know if its possible to get in touch with taxidermists down in jaco, or shipping companies, that use dry ice or something, and could send it back up home to west virginia? Im guessing this would be tough and expensive, if even possible.
I know im getting ahead of myself...gotta land the fish first lol
If not...no biggie...still looking forward for a fun filled week of fish, sun, imperials, and of course chicas!!!

I think that most fish taxidermists nowadays use fiberglass molds so you could just measure your catch and take a picture to give to a taxidermist when you get home.

Good Advice, Skink

You don't have to kill a fish, 'Scott - most captains will not allow it (good policy) - just get the measurements, and have it done when you get home - it will be cheaper and likely better - most places will not/don't offer "skin" mounts anyway and that is a good thing - the fiberglass mounts last forever, are less expensive, come out better and the fish lives to be caught another day

If you are coming again in February (one month from the date of your post) it will again be windy as fugg her. Wind blows like hell all of Jan and Feb each and every year.

Fishing is at it's worst during the windy season.

Best time for fishing is May June and November

You are so right CRG, a well known fact for people like you who live in Guanacaste/northern Pacific region. Jan-Feb up there is frigging blowing big time. So windy I got annoyed just walking the beach, my favorite pastime, and getting wind blown ragged on Playa Flamingo. Was there in January 15 years ago this month when I was scouring the Pacific side for what beach town I would like to make my "go-to" place.

But it ain't that way in Quepos in Jan/Feb, where I finally bought, or Jaco and the rest of the central pacific in southern Puntarenas area, for some reason. Only 2 mph now as we speak in Quepos, 8-9 mph tops next 7 days.

Jaco, an hour north of Quepos, calm this afternoon, 5 mph as I post, and similar to Quepos next 14 days, slightly higher one day. http://www.worldweatheronline.com/Jaco- ... as/CR.aspx .

Go figure. But you'll also know the Jaco/Quepos region and south is alot greener then your northern pacific area especially during CR's hot summer like now--90f on the south central coast today, so there is some scientific meteorological climatic difference between the two regions which must include the disparity in their early summer winds.

Unless you are prepared to pay about $2500 ++ for the mount, DON'T DO IT. The guys on the boats are paid a nice commissions from Gray's to talk you into it. They don't tell you the cost of the custom crate to ship it, the cost of shipping, insurance, etc.... then you get a mold not a skin mount anyway. If you really want something nice, get GOOD shots of the fish, keep the leader and the hook just ask the mates they let you have it, have a plexiglas window frame mount made of the fish photo, with the hook and line below it and it will be just as nice and you save yourself 2250.00

W.V. Shoot you can hope skip and a jump down to N.C. and catch all the sailfish you want all summer, go get a Blue or Black Marlin - that is a fight.

BTW Sails are not great fighters, yes they jump and eveyone goes ah & ooh, 3 years ago I landed a #290 Yellowfin standup no help 58 minutes. I have the tail, the hook and the leader mounted in a window box frame, bad ass. We ate the tuna for a week and still had enough to feed the village.

Very true - have fished Quepos and Jaco every Jan. for the past 10 years and have never experienced anything other than <fairly> calm seas - sometimes flat calm, other times, like last week, with just a slight roll to the ocean - but certainly never anything approaching rough conditions - we got 10 sail and one dolphin (mahi) the day we went out. Best day ever a few years ago was 26 sail and one marlin :D We fish aboard a 60' Bertram, so a center console its not

Have gone for tuna, and while I think it resulted in one of the best meals of my life, to me tuna fishing is like pulling up an anvil - TEHO

The charter fleet in Quepos is a little less expensive than Jaco, but fishing these days, with the price of fuel is not cheap - anywhere.

If you gotta have a mount on the wall, buy it on Craigslist. I bought an 11ft blue marlin full mount that looks like it is jumping off the wall--cost the original owner $4k, mount and ship--cost me $300.
Same with a trophy size wahoo--$25. Some people even believe that I caught the fish, when I lie to them without laughing

great idea - no matter where you live, some guys wife is sick of looking at his "wall mounts" - these things are expensive to get made, but fall in value faster than a house in Detroit during the last recession
