I need some help on this. For my next trip I have a "potential" wingman who wants to go for the fishing. Does anyone know of day trips from San Jose? He thinks he can just go to the beach and pay some guy a few bucks to take him out. The prices I have found are minimal of $500 so any help would be appreciated.

The only place I have been able to do that is in Jaco (not Los Suenos marina, but on the beach). Seven years ago, my wingman and I paid a tico fleet owner $350 for a day of fishing in a 26' panga boat. (I was very happy with the results, BTW.) Not sure what the prices are today. I also would recommend spending at least one night there... and at least two if fishing out of Quepos, Guanacaste or Puerto Viejo. The resident CRT expert on fishing is Mucho Gusto. I recommend you shoot him a pm... he can give you more current, and detailed, "skinny" than I can.

Part of the problem is this: he won't mind fishing but not with me. He will go on a boat only if I am not on it. He may be my best friend but I am a jinx on a fishing boat. In a quick summary on my boat fishing trips. One person fractured an ankle in 19 places, 2 boats have capsized, once a shark jumped on board and caused $1300 in damage, lightning struck the cloth cover, and on a 45' professional boat the engine blew out. So it would be him alone for obvious reasons.

Maybe if there is fresh water fishing in San Jose that someone knows about that may help persuade him.

Given what you wrote, put that way, I would not fish with you either  :P  :) Nah, just kidding (maybe)

Los Suenos is a possibility; although they like to get started early, so for an 8AM departure, do you really want to get up at 4:40 or 5AM - plus, if you charter a boat for deep sea fishing (vs a panga type for rooster fishing, goes just beyond the surf line) these days (at least in January) you are looking at 1k - 3k per day plus tips - sure, it can be split between 6 guys, but its still not cheap.

It just makes for a very long day and the thought of driving back to SJ after a full day on the water, getting up really early, makes it seem to make a lot more sense to get a room in Jaco (Believe it or not, next to the Beetle Bar is a nice clean comfortable hotel; their big room went for $80 or $100 in January; slept 3 - likely cheaper now in the "Green Season").

I did fresh water fishing on lake Arenal - for many factors I will not bore you with, it sucked - the fishing, the guides, etc - plus La Fortuna is not exactly real close to SJ.

I think - especially if you are going to lay out the $$ for Los Suenos fishing, get a room for a night or two - or hire a driver. (Or go to the Mercado Central and buy your fish there! :P :) :P )
