I have been here 7 years and not been to the Caribbean side. I am looking on lodging in town, pool AC and a two bedroom suite or Cabina would be perfect. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is one of the reasons I plan on returning to Costa Rica. I spent much of my time, when I traveled to CR, in this area. "Luxury" hotels are far and few inbetween down here. Most accommodations are spartan, and without AC. I would recommend checking out the following hotels. They have swimming pools and at least some of the rooms have air conditioning: Hotel Banana Azul- Rooms are around $100/ night. This place is a favorite with PV tourists who want the amenities of a "civilized" hotel. I was invited there 6 years ago, by a young couple who just got married at the hotel. It is a neat place, and just outside the village. Only some of the suites have AC. Hotel Cariblue- $90 - $140- Units include some air-conditioned bungalows. This hotel is in the secluded Playa Cocles area about 3 kms south of Puerto Viejo. The hotel has a restaurant and there are also a few places to eat in Cocles. This is a great area to stay if you want to avoid the crowds. Hotel Las Palmas & Hotel Suerre- These two beachfront hotels are situated side-by-side on Punta Uva. They are typical all-inclusive tourist type places with AC, swimming pools and one of them even has tennis courts. Rooms in 2006 were $70/night, and a package deal that included meals was also offered. The rooms were clean, comfortable (including AC & TV), but nothing fancy. |

BK..a few years back, after a Fallon eruption, I had to cancel Banana Azul at the last minute...literally one hour before catching the bus to Puerto Viejo. The owner could have charged me my whole rez, but said he would try to sell the room, and that if he could, he wouldn't charge me. Several hours later he called and said everything was square. I told him I would always recommend his place to anyone who asked about it. CH |

I have met the Banana Azul owner, nice guy, unfortunatley 16 and over Little Tuna is diqualified. Cariblue looks nice but I like to be in town typically. Any info on Casa Verde? |

Hotel Las Palmas was destroyed about a year ago by the government, having been built in the 'protected' zone too close to the beach. Only took them 18 years after the original order came down but it is no longer there... When I first checked out the place in 2006, a local had mentioned that the developer had damaged an environmentally sensitive area and was in deep trouble with the tico government. I was curious as to how things turned out. |

I have stayed at all these places and would recommend all of them. Cashew Hill is up a steep hill from the soccer field and is quite a steep climb.
