Yes, I've explored the area, and been to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui several times. La Selva is located in the northern lowlands region, on the Caribbean slope, and the La Selva Biological Station is located about 3 km south of Puerto Viejo. Your best bet would be to rent a car or hire a driver for the day... it is roughly a 1 1/2 - 2 hr trip from the gulch. To get there from the gulch, take Calle 3 north until it becomes Hwy 32. Hwy 32 is a toll road, and will take you east through Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo towards Guapiles. As you head down the Caribbean slope, take Hwy 4 north towards Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. After passing through the pueblo, Las Horquetas, look for the park entrance on the left side of the road. |

You might also take the 11:30am public bus that should pass there (and be able to let you off right there if you tell the driver) just before their 1:30pm afternoon tour starts. Or, if you think that is cutting it to close, the 10am bus gets you to Puerto Viejo in time for lunch after which you can walk or take a local cab to La Selva and have some time to look around on your own a little before the tour starts. The tour itself costs $30 and runs about 3.5hrs (i.e. finishing around 5pm). You can then wait around for a little while and catch the 5:30pm return bus to SJ (arriving around 7:30pm) or, if you're at all uncomfortable or uncertain about having to flag down that bus, take a cab back to PV where you can catch the bus at its origin. It might be a little less convenient but will only run you less than $5 each way (plus a little bit more for the local cab if you use it) compared to quite a bit more for a private driver or rental car. |
