I am an amateur poker player and love to play at Delrey ,but I feel a bit intimated and don't know how to do it.Any of you guys can shed some light on how to play the game. How much do I need to lay out ,what is the max ,how the bets proceed and what is the maximum pot per hand can reach up to? |

I have been in that room a few times and looks like the same group ....playing most of the time ...I would stay away from it ....the questions you are asking are those of a very part time player ...I would tell you to stick to the home or local game (in your town) plus right outside that room is 80 girls you can spend your money on ....if you enjoy playing cards ...go to the bj or tute table and play 1000c a hand and get a few free drinks ...If that game was full of guys on vacation ...it would be a different story ....quote ...if your at a poker table and you don't know who the fish is ? it's you |

Dos, You should NEVER try to learn a game at a casino table. That goes for poker, blackjack, and every other table gameetc. For one, you will not know what you are doing and will give away all your money and also annoy the other players. At a poker table, they would probably welcome you since the other players get to take all your money. ![]() To learn poker, first go online and read the rules. Texas Hold 'em poker is extremely easy to learn as far as the basics go. You can then download the poker software from bodog and play for play money. www.bodog.eu When you are better at it and know some basic strategy, go to a casino. At Del Rey, the game is $1/$2 blinds, with a $100 buy-in minimum, I believe, but it could be $50. It's a fairly loose game. Getting some decent cards and playing patiently can mean a nice pay day. |

Gweiss wrote: Sounds like a no-limit game. If there are friends at the game, they will join forces and beat you out of your money. Simple really. They just keep betting, drive you off of your hand, and then they share later. You get pushed off of your hands. It is great when you are on a role, and getting gret cards, but generally the hands are over-bid to get you to fold, and they they check to the river, and one or the other collects. There is no dought, even without seeing the game that heavy cheating and teaming-up on the lone gringo player is happening. This happens in almost every game to some extent. If you try this tacktic on them you can expect a serious response also. So if it is for fun, and you have a few hundred to blow, then go for it. But expect if you play tight, and only bet when you have something, the field will know this and drop out before getting hurt. I like the game because you are playing other cheater, and not the house. I hear the house takes a 5% cut off of the pots, which can be high compaired to a flat rate on limit texas hold-em. Enjoy, and keep a limit of loss, and stick to it. Jorge There's no collusion. The rake is 10%, max $5. |

The poker rooms in CR are non-smoking. You have to go outside the room to smoke. Even poker rooms in the US are smoke-free. |

I have played poker at the Del Rey every trip to San Jose over the past three years, and never suspected cheating by any of the locals. Most of the locals who play at the Del Rey are not TICO's but residents. Of the TICO's who play, several of them can get a little load when losing but if you are respectful they are harmless. Some of the European surfers that stop by for a day on the way to the beach I have questioned if they were using chip placement and working as a team before but that was only twice. The game at the Del Rey is not for a total newbie but if you have played before you will be okay. As mentioned before the poker room is smoke free. |

And for any of you that wanna play tourneys at low buyins, the Palacio has a couple of low buyins a week and the Best Western Irazu has quite a few. In case you are learning the game and don't wanna risk alot. |

I've logged a ton of hours at the DR poker room. Definitely not the place for a newbie to come play, your roll will be gone very quickly. When I was living there and making a living off of poker, to be honest, that type of player was my bread and butter. In town for the week, here to have a good time, and doesn't mind losing a few hundred. All part of the vacation. I really wouldn't worry about collusion, I never suspected any with any of the regulars that played. Depending on the crowd, it can be either very docile or plain crazy. A Tuesday game at 6pm is no where near as nuts as Saturday night at 11. Just have to play it by ear. |
