Welcome to the board Florida Boy good to see someone else on the board who likes to explore all of Costa Rica as well as the women.I'm not finding any info on the train but sounds interesting.Where is Caldera beach relative to San Jose.What I am finding are references that say most of the rail lines were closed after the 1991 earthquake caused major damage.rbc100

The Tour starts every Sunday to 6 o'clock in the morning and returned around the 7 at night

It looks like $25 (see web site below) but I just sent an email asking cost of a round trip ticket to be sure.
From what I have read Sunday is kind of a dead day for Tica’s I think this might be a pleasant way to see more of CR going from the mountains down to the beach.

Just got this info back on train tour

Cost of trip of a round trip from San Jose to Puntarenas
The regular rate is $30 round trip, but we are giving you our net rate for a train tour from San José to Caldera Port (this is our final destination with the train) If you will like to visit Puntarenas, there is an additional charge of $3 per person round trip from Caldera to Puntarenas and back to take the train again to San Jose.
When would you like to travel?

I dont know anybody that has taken this trip. I HAVE been to Caldera and Puntarenas...no chicas, no good beaches, not even much culture to mention. WHY would you want to go there? Check it out for yourself...but dont waste a high percentage of your vacation time. IMHO...

Tman, you posted exactly what I was going to. Caldera to my knowledge is not a beach but a dirty Port. Puntarenas is a good place for dengue fever (I was last there during a major outbreak) and a place to catch a ferry to head over to Nicoya. I have never heard of anyone taking a train but i have been to the train museum.

I am seriously thinking about moving to CR,
This is my first trip and want to get exposed to as much of CR outside the gulch as possible.
The train stops a couple of the cities along the way and I can see and met people in smaller towns
I think I would like the trip down from the mountains to the beach to experience the different climates
Caldera/Puntarenas is just a turn around point for me for the return trip back to SJ
Plus I LOVE riding trains much more than riding in a car or bus and Sunday is supposed to be a dead day for Tica’s

I had a date with the tica that won the 2001 Miss Puntarenas contest. The only problem was.....she had marks all over her body from where guys had been touching her with 10 foot poles. Needless to say the pickings are pitiful in that not happening cuidad. Fear not though, old Circus did not get laid with her either. Last trip to Puntarenas.

It's really too bad that the earthquake destroyed much of the tracks. Don't know if any of you rode the train to the eastern coast but it was an adventure. Some minor parts of that route are still used from what I hear but not all the way. I sincerely believe the demise of the rails really hurt the economy in CR. Too bad they do not have the money or the inclination to restore it. Damn, I could have been a train robber with CRdreamin as my sidekick and several other CRT members in the gang. Holding up chica travelers and demanding sex enstead of colones........Shit, this old fart would have probably fallen off the damn horse and down the cliff before boarding the train. Not to mention never getting laid. Oh well, I can dream can't I. Butch Circus and Sundance Dreamin.........Never mind.

I beg to differ on no chicas in Puntarenas. Three years ago I headed up there with some other loco gringos that were familiar with the local Tico bar/whorehouses. As it turned out, there were three places on the same street within a stone's throw of each other. If my memory serves me right, I believe that I payed $20 and I am sure that is the inflated gringo price. Would I go back? Not until I can't afford the Beatle Bar, or even Chesperito's near Tarcoles.

I truly dont believe still that this train trip exists. Maybe a "ghost train" :lol: Yes...you can find $20 or less action most anywhere in Latin America...the question would be..."would I touch her with YOURS"?

Still...I take my hat off to your desire to see the country. I just think there are better ways and places to go than Carldera /Puntarenas. A bus trip to San Isidro as discussed on another thread these days makes more sense. FOr a beach trip, I highly recomment Puerto Viejo and beaches south of there on the Caribbean side.
