Does anyone here know of any movies theaters in Costa Rica that show movies in English? I don´t really care if they have Spanish subtitles. |

Most of the larger malls (San Pedro, Escazu) have theaters that show movies in English with Spanish subs. There is even an IMAX theater in Escazu now. There are two, small theaters closer to the gulch, but think they mainly show movies in Spanish. |

When I first started visiting in 2000 the majority of theaters were English w/Spanish subtitles. There are even a few large 1 screeners around. |

San Pedro Mall shows most movies in English with Spanish subtitles. It will say it on the time table board what language the movies are in. The tickets are about $4 each, unlike the $12-15 we pay in the US. Popcorn and drinks are about $2 each. You can take a girl out for under $20, including the taxi. ![]() |

I haven't been able to figure out how the release dates work for movies in Costa Rica. A lot of times I'll look through the listings at theaters in CR and see movies that I've already seen on a plane or on video in the U.S., and other movies only a week behind our release. Today I see Thor already listed in most San Jose area theaters, but it doesn't get widely released in the States until May 6th. |

I avoid the theaters here on Wednesday, Friday , Sat & Sun and any holiday as there is sometimes a very long line and often the theater is 100% full on these days. Wednesday is full because many theaters have 2x1 on Wednesday. Besides the lines, a lot of people here like to talk during the show and that causes me to want to pull a Rambo when someone sits in front of me and wants to chat on their cell phone or sits behind me and kicks my seat. I am way to sensitive to be in a theater full of Ticos. And at my age, pulling a Rambo would probably mean I just wind up getting my asss kicked. |

You can access the movie times on-line and find out whether they showing is in English with Subtitles or it is dubbed. The Mall de Este or Multiplaza del Este is in Curridabat. It has a multiplex theater owned by Cinemark, the same Cinemark as the US. It is much nicer than San Pedro Mall. Click on this link http://www.cinemarkca.com/ Then click on Costa Rica, then either Multiplaza del Este or Escazu. From the gulch Mall del Este is closer. There is a great theater in Terra Mall which is in Tres Rios. It is a Mexican chain call Cinéoplis http://www.cinepolis.co.cr/indexcr.aspx?ciudad= It too is like any theater at a mall in the USA. But Cinéoplis has long had a VIP section. It is around double the price of regular admission. You sit in a Lazyboy chair which allows you to put your feet up and really relax. They offer table service just like a restaurant. You can select from the regular fare of popcorn and candy or you can get sandwiches, sushi and drinks from a full service bar. They accept cards but I am not sure if they are credit or debit. I never use either. |

Another thing, I have been to screenings in Costa Rica which were shown before they were released in the US. Most often the movies are released either simultaneous with the US release or a week or two after. Almost all cartoon movies are in Spanish with no English subtitles. |

And not to be so picky even though I probably am, You often have to fight for hot popcorn. I usually walk around to see where it was freshly popped. Otherwise they are happy to give you a bag of cold popcorn. If I'm going to eat coconut oil, I at least want to enjoy it. |

Another good one to go to is Mall Desamarados. You can view their website at http://multicentro-desamparados.com/. Their movie theater is better than the one in Mall San Pedro. |
