I want to do a lot of day trips while I am done...certainly lots to do out of San Jose...whitewater, ATV, zip lines, etc...gotta have something to fill the days

My question is should I book these all in advance or is it better and book most of them once I am done there? (going down end of Jan)

Just not sure I want to really prebook, prepay and them be totally comitted...also wonder if get a better deal booking once there...

any advice appreciated...

cant speak for you but over 30 trips ....I have gone on 1 day trip....did the zip line deal...if it wasnt for my wing needing photos to prove he did something ...I would of found some way of getting out of that one....mp's ....mall ...hooters....sportmens...new dunn inn ..mp's ......delrey ...nyb ......walking on central ave....sitting on the rail at the news cafe ....all pu*sy related .....now those are some things to do during the day...the other shit is only for proof your not phucking all day ....

Have gone on many, albeit when I was new to CR. Plan them on the ground here, and there are nice, less strenuous trips, like to the Marriott for Sunday Brunch, to the Volcan Irazu, to the hot springs that are less involved then hitting Class V rapids with a local company(I still am recovering from the one I took in Australia).

Definitely book after you are down. That way you can get a feel for what Chili is talking about as well and make your plans then.

Like MG says, most plans go to hell as soon as you walk in HDR/ SL for the 1st time

The Zip lines are a blast.

Care to give some details on the ATV tours as I have heard good things.

Ok. Maybe I should qualify my response. If you have never done any ATV or offroading of any type you will enjoy this. The scenery was nice. The guide take you down rural dirt roads through some scenic country. It was somewhat enjoyable but not challenging whatsoever. The person asking about this was considering zip line and whitewater rafting too and the ATV is lame compared to those two.

Also, the ATV operator does not do regular maintenance on the machines. My unit did not have a rear brake and it died toward the end of the trip. I had to ride back in on the back of the guides machine.

I always book tours after I arrive... and usually the day before. I use the tour services available at most gulch hotels, and have always been pleased with the results (including Hotel Del Rey once). You may be able to get a better deal doing it last minute when the tour companies need to fill seats. Although the hotel front desks may get a cut of the action, they stand a greater chance of getting a better price than the "sticker amount" listed on a website.

I just got back from CR two weeks ago and would say to book your trips once you get here as the weather can be a killer and who wants to be in a torrential downpour for a day when there are plenty of indoor activities to keep you very very busy indeed. I just did the Wild Rider day tour and had a blast riding dirt bikes on some twisty turning mountain roads combination of back road pavement and dirt roads with a few stops for photo ops and lunch at Keri lodge to catch a trout for lunch and eat it. Next time during dry season I will be doing the day trip from San Jose to the beach and back. The trip in and out of San Jose in the morning wasn't too bad but...wow....the Tico traffic in the afternoon was interesting to say the least. Splitting lanes and bobbing and weaving amongst multiple lanes of traffic has its merits. Riding the bikes we did 300k in one day and saw the entire Orosi valley, Cartago, Irazu, and some other volcano that is in the middle of nowhere up goat paths plus lunch at Keri.

That sounds like a blast...what was the damage for the trip? I am street biker but with no dirt experience do you think it would be doable?

Thanks for others who commented (well with actual helpful comments)...sounds like mostly waiting to get down there will be the plan--I going end of Jan so hoping weather will be mostly decent

and yeah, planning on getting laid some--but that part is only half reason for me going--really do enjoy the outdoor shit...being from Canada it will be nice to be outdoors that time of year and frankly if it was just about getting laid, I could just take the days off, stay here and get laid tons and have money left over--our hobbying scene is a lot more open and reasonable than what I have seen/understand most US cities to be like...

The entire day with a bike and a one on one guide with me riding an xr250 lunch and admission into the sites was 250.00. If you have more people the price drops substantially but in the traffic you might get separated and it will be a pain. A smaller group of maybe 4 would be about the biggest I would suggest. If you want only back roads with no dirt just tell them they can tailor what you want. Even the dirt wasn't all that bad. Where I went was no single track and there are virtually no rocks its kinda weird. The dirt is more of a consistency of coffee grinds not even any clay like you would have up in Canada. The other thing I did this trip which was great was to get a Chica for the day to hang with me and assist with the touring different parts of the city I had not yet seen and even got me to a little Harley shop for shirts. Went up to Puriscal and saw the cigar factory which is a free tour and then of course had her. Enjoy the trip if you have never been to CR you are in for a treat.

Yes, that sounds like an excellent way to spend time outside the gulch.

went to website--interesting they seem to only rent for min 3 days...

could see grabbing a bike and just taking off for a day...something to check into when I get down there I guess...will just have to remember to bring at least a jean jacket and gloves in case I do (good for ATVing too I guess)
