I am attempting to learn some Spanish and was wondering about the locals that work in the service jobs, such as waiters, hotel clerks, casino dealers, taxi drivers, etc... Do most speak fluent English?

Hotel clerks mostly speak English, Taxi drivers do not, Waiters at tourist hotels do, waiters at other non tourist places do not, most chicas do not, most casino dealers do a little. It is not like tourist destinations in Mexico where everyone speaks English. People at the airport do. Most people do not speak English if not in regular direct contact with tourist as part of their work.

most waiters, taxi drivers, etc do not speak fluent english. Some hotel workers that work at the front desk of hotels that cater to tourists, say for example at The Presidente Hotel or The Clarion, speak good english. But the vast majority of workers that come in contact with tourists do not speak good english. I think that with rare exceptions, to become fluent you must live in a country where the foreign language is spoken, which opportunity those workers have not had. And then you would need to take advantage of that, by putting yourself in a situation where you speak only spanish for most or all of the day, for an extended period of time. On the other hand, if your goal is not fluency, but merely to increase your communication skills, you wouldn't need to isolate yourself like that, but the more practice the better. A simple way to improve your spanish is to get a spanish-speaking girlfriend and practice with her.

Lol. I assume that's a joke. (Speak english "well" is the correct form). If not, then the irony meter is off the scale.

Here goes JazzboCR hijacking another thread. Is there no end to it?
Anyway--of course Brother Prolijo meant it as a joke it--but it was sure 'nuff bittersweet. Do you really want me to rant on the execrable state of public discourse by those who purport that English is their native and only language? And then both expect you to understand them and reply in the dumbdest-down possible way? One of the more popular ways to electronically "communicate" is even called Twitter--used by twits, I expect.

Prolijo has a superior intellect and an excellent command of the English language. Based on the obvious misspelling and grammatical errors I am certain it was intended to be humorous.

And about Brother Prolijo, here's the kicker--he even proofreads his material before publishing. Would that more would do so.

As The Big Bopper once said in another context,"Oh, Baby, you KNOW what I like!".
