There actually is a Cuban Cigar Outlet or at least there was north of the San Pedro Mall. I believe it is mentioned in one of the old threads that were hyper linked in another post

First, it is indeed my pleasure to become a lifetime member of CRT. Second, I will be in CR 7/30-8/2. Third, I have a question re quality cigars. I understand from reading the forum that legit cubans can be procured in the duty free shop at SJO. Can anyone tell me which duty free shop in sjo has the cubans and how to get there? thanks.. |

Brother Bangolfer--Except for bragging rights, there's not much point in Cubanos. It's been discussed by gents way more knowledgeable than me, and the consensus is that Nicaraguan, Dominican, even Costa Rican cigars are better. Plus of course, legal. The Cubans have done their best to ruin the rep of Cubano cigars--tearing up the best land to plant cane to trade the Russki's, not supporting those in the industry, etc. Maybe someday they'll rectify this but now--not worth the hassle and not the quality either. |

I agree that Cubans are overrated. Are there places in SJO to buy Hondurans, Dominicans etc? The cigars, not the women. |

Eduardo of HLH (Eddie....but he don't prefer that name) owns and operates a very small cigar shop across the street from Morazon Park; as I recall, it is next to a couple of souvenier shops....but it's right there....sorry the vagueness. As well, there is another cigar store just down from the Hotel Morazan (sp?)....a tiny place but with a vast selection and several levels of pricing.... Then of course is CRT VIP sponser Don Ursulo who has a world class product which he will have delivered to your hotel or shipped to you world wide. He will supply samples while you are in Costa Rica so you're not buying a pig in a poke. http://www.donursulo.com/ He is Swiss and does brisk business in Europe but his product is gaining weight in the USA as a top notch ceegar. |

Actually, Eddie has a cigar shop in the HLH. I tried a Costa Rican cigar he's getting ready to put out this fall. It was very good. Much better than any Cubanos that I may or may not have tried. |

Sr. OFT educated me on cigars a bit. He's a cigar collector, aging them carefully in a humidor room, and has even graciously allowed me to sample some fine cigars. One of the most valuable lessons he taught me was that real habanos smell of hay and earth when the box is opened. Secondly, there are a load of fakes being sold in San Jose, some very good counterfeits but about as Cuban as Larry David.  Beware for instance of Cohiba knock-offs that have printed, not embossed rings. These fakes are not only sold by street hawkers outside the Hotel del Rey...they are often foisted off on ignorant tourists by otherwise reputable vendors. 
Third, much of the tobacco grown for, and used in cigar manufacture elsewhere in Latin America comes directly from Cuban seed. In fact, a CRT member once toured Don Benigno (another fine C.R. cigar maker) and swears that the bags of tobacco and cases of wrappers he saw all said "Producto de Cuba." Which means that even though the cigars are legal to import into the U.S., they are effectively, Cuban cigars. To my undereducated palate, the Nicaraguan, Dominican, Honduran and even Costa Rican cigars are every bit as good as anything I've smoked from Cuba. Again, this is to my tastes, and YMMV. |
